Understanding the 0405 283 770 / 0405283770 Scam

If you've received a call from 0405 283 770 / 0405283770, it's essential to be cautious. Users across Australia have rated this number as a scam, consistently reporting attempts by callers to impersonate a courier company. Let's delve into the details and guide you on how to handle future calls from this number or similar situations.

What’s the Factual Basis Behind This Number?

Multiple reports indicate that callers are falsely representing themselves as representatives from a courier company based in Mascot, Sydney. They often mention having a package related to your name, leveraging outdated address information from years ago to gain your trust.

Type of Scam: Private Investigator Ploy

The reports from users near the dates of 14 March 2023 and 9 May 2023 suggest that these callers are not actual couriers but rather private investigators working for a legal firm. Their tactic involves creating urgency and concern by claiming they have a package, leading victims to unwittingly divulge personal information.

Latest Reports Indicate: Lack of Credibility

A further report from 18 September 2023 raises suspicions about the legitimacy of their operation. The caller mentioned being from a courier service but couldn't provide concrete details about the package's origin, with all pertinent information seemingly 'smudged'. This lack of transparency — coupled with the fact that they have already rung users' employers — raises serious red flags.

How to Handle Calls from 0405 283 770?

  • Do Not Engage: If you suspect you're receiving a scam call, do not engage or provide personal details.
  • Hang Up: Politely end the call as soon as you sense that something is off.
  • Report the Number: Utilise platforms like Reverseau or similar to report your experience and warn others.
  • Verify Independently: If you feel a package might genuinely be in transit, contact the courier service directly using verified contact information instead of what the caller provides.

Persistently ringing saying they are from a courier company but can't even tell me where the package is from, all addresses have been "smudged". Even provided a fake website. Then they rang my employer. I don't know who they are but I rang them and gave them a real serve. Be careful with these people!!

The caller pretended to represent a Sydney-based courier company and said they had a package with my name and phone number. However, they did not have my address and were, in fact, a private investigator working for a legal firm attempting to gather my personal information.
