This guy messaged me today about something I'm selling on Gumtree. Alex Williams was his name as well. Can the scam watchers people do something about this?
Tried to SCAM me by messaging me on WhatsApp for the item I'm selling on Gumtree.
According to him his name is Alex Mitchell. He send me a malicious link disguised as Australia Post for me to supply my Bank Details for his payment and will send a courier to collect the item I'm selling.
Nice try, what a Low life. Ha Ha Ha.
I reported our conversation in whatsapp.
I had a WhatsApp message soon after listing something on Gumtree - I didn't expect to get that much interest and I was wary of receiving a direct WhatsApp message rather than through Gumtree. It also said Hi Firstname Lastname, which I thought a bit odd. He said he was sick and couldn't pick up in person but would arrange it through Auspost and pay everything himself. I thought it was a bit fishy so I googled 'Alex Mitchell Gumtree scam' and found all these reviews from the same number.
So watch out anybody who receives the same kind of message!
He got me. I am usually very cautious but I let my guard down. Be aware. It all looks legit and my keenness to sell what I advertised on Gumtree made me vulnerable.
Just had this guy message me about buying my nursing books quickly followed by a +308 number thankfully I read these messages.
Conducting scam requests to purchase items, and organise postage of items from Gumtree AU. BLOCK ASAP.
Just had someone text through WhatsApp on this number trying to get me to send them an item I had put on sale in Gumtree. They said they were sick and I should send to them and they would reimburse me. Could tell was a scam from person ignoring my advert and to call me instead of messaging.
This just happened to me now and exactly as stated. Some bloke trying to get me send my TV to him.
About 3 weeks ago I posted on Gumtree an old scientific reference book - just in case there was a special interests collector there.
A few days later The "so called" Alex Mitchell sent a WhatsApp message wanting to buy the book. Because the said he was sick he said that he would arrange payment through an Aust Post system and would arrange shipment to him.
According to Google searches, he seems to be in Queensland!!
The weblink said that he had made the payment to the facility and asked for details of an account to forward the funds to. The account I gave, always only has less than $50 available but it was not showing the receipt of the money for the book.
I tried to phone him, but the calls have always been unanswered and after a while, he stopped making Whatsapp comments.
Since then I've been receiving landline nuisance spam calls from Brisbane. Most of which I've not answered and then when a voice mail has not been left for me, I then blocked the number.
My next step is to report the spam calls and Alex's Gumtree presence to the authorities. I hope the government can throw the rile book at him!
Got me in townsville today. Pathetic really.
Immediately after my posting, he messaged me, very suspicious. Seems like he scams for a living.
Yes, he tried me today. Found this info on him. S Nair from Kerala.
Same thing... Said he'd pay via Australia Post. Then the site links you to a page where you put your credit card details in. Lol..
I'm talking to him right now. He's getting frustrated ;)

Please only do cash on hand.
Appears to be a scammer on Gumtree via WhatsApp to request you click on a link to an Australia post site where they supposedly pay for postage for the item they are buying off you. They then ask you to “confirm the deal”. Do not click on the link.
