What We Know About the Calls

The reports consistently describe calls where the person on the other end claims to represent immigration services. Interestingly, these callers communicate in foreign languages including Mandarin and Thai, and they often insist that the recipient must collect important documents in person, specifically from a location in Melbourne or an embassy.

Typical Characteristics of the Scam

  • Imposter Claims: Callers pose as immigration officials or representatives, a tactic designed to instil urgency and fear.
  • Document Claims: Victims are told about documents that supposedly require signing, creating a sense of obligation to act quickly.
  • Specific Reference Numbers: They provide fabricated reference numbers that appear to relate to the recipient, further enhancing their credibility.
  • Language Barriers: The use of non-English languages is likely an attempt to target specific demographics, narrowing the potential audience for the scam.

The caller claims to be the immigration department, and they have a document I need to pick up and sign in person in Melbourne. The caller refused to post to myself or forward the documents to a local office near me. The caller then told me that the reference number is A00XXXX where XXXX is my year of birth (looks like a fake number). Then told me the document is about complains they received from “other individuals “ about my phone number sending SMS pretending to be the immigration department. I said I’m unaware of any such SMS and suggested they report the issue to police for further investigation. The entire conversation is in Chinese.
