User Experiences Highlighting the Scam

According to multiple reports, calls from this number typically begin with the caller mentioning your last name and claiming they are sending out updated NBN modems for your specific postcode. While this might sound benign, the unsolicited nature of these calls immediately raises red flags.

One user reported that upon realising the caller was very interested in obtaining their internet supplier details, they began to feel increasingly suspicious. The caller admitted to being part of a supplier comparison company, and their earlier claims regarding modem updates were contingent on switching internet providers. Such tactics are commonly used in scams, making it crucial to handle them with caution.

Understanding the Scam Type

This situation exemplifies a supplier comparison scam, where scammers leverage personal information to lure individuals into a false sense of security, eventually attempting to convince them to switch providers. They often use persuasive language and details such as your last name and postcode to create an illusion of legitimacy.

The caller had my last name and said they were sending out updated National Broadband Network modems in my postcode… yes they had this information too. Then they asked about my internet supplier at which I became more suspicious about the intent of the call. I said this is sounding like a SCAM because they didn’t need to know that information. At this point they confessed they were part of a supplier comparison company.

Obviously the claim about getting an updated modem etc was all dependent on changing internet providers- these people should be shut down!

I received an unsolicited call offering an NBN upgrade. Given that I didn’t request this information, I suspect it may be a scam.
