Unmasking the Scam: 03 9028 8401

In recent reports, 03 9028 8401 / 0390288401 has emerged as a notorious phone number, with several users sharing disturbing experiences that classify it unequivocally as a scam. This number is part of a phishing scheme where callers impersonate banking representatives to extract sensitive personal information from unsuspecting victims.

Identifying the Scam Type

Phishing scams typically involve a fraudulent attempt to obtain confidential information by masquerading as a trustworthy entity. In this case, the callers have pretended to represent major financial institutions like Commonwealth Bank, Macquarie Bank, and Bendigo Bank. They often claim that there have been suspicious transactions on the victim's account, creating a false sense of urgency to instil panic and push targets into compliance.

How the Scam Works

As highlighted in multiple user reports, the scammers employ various tactics:

  • Manipulative Conversations: Callers speak convincingly and personable, often detailing personal information that makes the encounter seem legitimate.
  • Urgent Feelings: They create a convincing narrative about breaching security and immediate action required to prevent financial loss.
  • Information Gathering: The scammers request sensitive banking details, using emotional manipulation to get victims to share more than they should.

What To Do If You Receive a Call from This Number

If you receive a call from 03 9028 8401 / 0390288401, or any number that raises suspicion, take the following steps:

  • Report the Number: Consider reporting this number to relevant authorities or fSec to help others steer clear of the scam.

The scammer rang from this number at 1:35 pm on Tuesday 23 July 2024 to say he was from Bendigo Bank, whom I bank with, and that there had been a number of suspicious transactions attempted from my account. He was extremely convincing about steps I needed to take to better protect myself and then claimed to want to find out how the data breach occurred. Concluded it was due to my direct debits with Tangerine and then attempted to get information about what devices I use to register my bank account details. This is when I got suspicious so Googled this number to see other people reporting it as a scam, so I hung up. The scammer had an English accent, talked quickly and was very personable. It wasn't a great connection, which was another red flag. As well as knowing my full name, phone number, that I bank with Bendigo Bank and use Tangerine, he also knew my address. He attempted to create a sense of panic and urgency about further breaches in order to get me to go along with giving out information. I can't believe I fell for it for so long before realising something was wrong!
