The phone number 03 9028 7730 / 0390287730 has raised significant alarms among Australian residents, as multiple reports characterise it as a scam number designed to impersonate the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Claiming that recipients have a warrant out for their arrest if they do not respond, this scam leverages fear tactics to prompt immediate action.

Identifying the Scam

Users have reported receiving automated messages from this number, often featuring an unsettling voice recording threatening arrest if the individual does not return the call. These messages do not address the recipient by name nor do they provide the legitimate details an official agency would supply, further indicating their fraudulent nature.

Scammers commonly utilise these tactics, often conducting such schemes from overseas, primarily in regions known for fraudulent activities. It’s crucial for Australians to understand that no legitimate government agency, such as the ATO, will contact you about criminal matters via phone. All formal communication pertaining to taxation issues or arrest warrants would typically be issued via official mail.

Voice mail message left when I rejected call Saturday afternoon in Qld - electronic voice recording advising of arrest warrant if call not returned.

This is a scam number. They left me an automated voicemail threatening me with an arrest warrant without addressing my full name or the organisation that the message was sent from. These types of scams are typically made from India and because people know this, they’ve set up an automated message to fool you into believing that this is from a professional agency. Notifications such as these are not made by phone calls but sent to you by mail, no government agency will call you about an arrest warrant. Unless you have experience with scammers of this level, I suggest you refrain from returning their call and just dismiss it entirely. They will not attempt to call you back so there’s no need to stress.

Recorded message claiming to be ATO with a warrant for your arrest if you do not return the call received lunchtime Saturday. Firstly ATO does not work Saturdays & if there was a query it would come on a hard copy letter delivered by Australia Post. This is a scam.
