Understanding the Scam Behind 03 9028 5739

The phone number 03 9028 5739 / 0390285739 has generated significant concern among Australian users who have reported it as a scam. The reports indicate that calls or emails linked to this number are primarily aimed at alarming victims into believing they have an outstanding subscription with the antivirus service, McAfee.

An Analysis of User Reports

Users have consistently described receiving emails claiming to confirm a $419.00 subscription charge to McAfee, often instructing recipients to call this number to address the supposed issue. Many individuals have reported these emails were sent to 'Undisclosed recipients' suggesting they were mass-distributed attempts to target multiple recipients at once. Distinctively, it appears that the scammers impersonate McAfee to instill fear, hoping recipients will act hastily and call the number provided.

Common Patterns of Scam

  • Subscription Scare Tactics: The emails typically warn about an impending charge or subscription renewal, allegedly processed through PayPal.
  • Fake Support Claims: Scammers falsely claim to represent McAfee's customer support, leading to confusion and concern for the victims.
  • Common Accent: Users have noted that those answering the phone exhibit a distinct Indian accent, indicative of typical call centre behaviour used in fraudulent schemes.

How to Handle Calls from 03 9028 5739

If you receive a call or email from this number, it is crucial not to engage. Here are steps you should take:

  • Do not provide any personal or financial information.
  • Do not call back the number; it variously emerges as a phishing attempt.
  • Report these communications to local authorities or an internet crime reporting centre, such as ACORN in Australia.
  • Use a Reverse Phone Lookup tool, like Reverseau, to identify possible information about the number and confirm its suspicious status.

Stay vigilant against calls and emails that seem dubious. Always verify independently and remain informed about prevalent scams. If you suspect a call is fraudulent, it is better to be cautious than face the potential consequences of identity theft or financial fraud.

I received a scam alert stating that they wanted to debit $419 from my account. I've reported this to McAfee customer support, which is supposed to protect its customers from such threats.

I received a call stating that McAfee PayPal would debit $419 for a one-year subscription. I believe this to be a scam. I have blocked the caller and also sent an email to report this incident.

I got a scam email asking for $419.00 for a supposed renewal of my subscription to McAfee, which I do not have. I frequently receive these scam emails, and this one quoted a customer service number, (08) 6007 3627.

I have received an email and saying I completed a payment with Macfee and PayPal of $419. I know it's a spam but I called the number (no showing my caller ID) on the picture (no pdf) included in the email, +61 3 9028 5739. A guy with indian accent picked up and I told him the invoice number lightning fast (like usually that can't be captured), he said it's all good, the email was a spam.....lol.

Mail in my spam folder purportedly from McAffee advising I would debited $419 for renewal of internet security. This phone number appears in the email to call so as to prevent debit going ahead. I haven't had McAffee for many years so they wouldn't have my payment details anyway. I've ignored email & conclude the no. In email is a disguised link to get into your device or take you to a spoof website that will capture your private details.

An Indian-sounding scammer contacted me, claiming that my McAfee subscription was expiring. The problem is, I don’t even have a McAfee subscription! This feels like a clear scam attempt.

Got an email saying their from pay pal and $441 was going to come out of my account if I didn’t call them.

Scam as per other reports. Received an email in my SPAM folder which included this number to call if I had questions about my "subscription renewal". There was an attachment that I did not open... There was no text in the email body other than the attachment. No outward indication as to what the renewal was for. This phone number was included in the subject line.

This phone number appears to be associated with a scam call center, likely located in India. During my interactions, I noticed that the call center representatives often use common names like Oliver, and the majority of those answering the calls are male.

Received as an email with this number noting $419.00 subscription to McAfee. It's a scam email. I never had had a subscription to McAfee. The email advises that if I didn't authorise this charge to please call 03) 9028 5739. Email is to 'Undisclosed recipients'. It’s a scam don’t reply.

This is definitely a SCAM. The callers are posing as representatives asking me to call regarding an update to my McAfee subscription and threatening that I will be charged $419.00 if I don't comply. I have no account with McAfee, so do not engage with these scam calls.

Second email in a week thanking me for a $419.00 subscription to McAfee. It's a scam email. I don't and never had had a subscription to McAfee. The email advises that if I didn't authorise this charge to please call 03) 9028 5739. It's the third email from defferent senders I've had in the last two weeks and they are all sent to 'Undisclosed recipients'. Pffft!
