Understanding the Scam Behind 03 9020 2280

If you've recently encountered the number 03 9020 2280 / 0390202280, you may be one of many who have received suspicious calls, primarily identified as an ANZ scam. Users have reported that this number typically employs an automated voice to prompt questions about unauthorised transactions on bank accounts, a tactic cleverly designed to instil fear and provoke immediate responses from unsuspecting recipients.

How the Scam Operates

The fraudulent calls generally involve a robotic voice claiming to be from ANZ Bank, asking victims if they authorised transactions that they did not initiate. Reports indicate various amounts have been mentioned, including $1000 and $1600, along with threats of card restrictions or suspicious activity warnings. This imposter strategy is not only deceitful but also involves an invasive method to gain personal banking details.

Common Signs of the Scam

  • Automated Voice Messages: Legitimate banks will rarely use automated messages for urgent matters, instead favouring personal communication.
  • Requests for Personal Information: Be wary if the caller asks for sensitive information, such as your bank details or security codes.
  • Incorrect Account Information: Scammers often misuse personal details or quote incorrect card information.
  • Mixed Bank Brands: Reports highlight confusion where callers falsely represent multiple banks, irritatingly confusing legitimate customers.

How to Handle Suspicious Calls

To ensure your safety when confronted with calls from this number, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Do Not Engage: If you suspect inconsistency or if the number is unknown to you, refrain from interacting with the caller.
  • Verify the Caller: Disconnect and contact your bank's official customer service for verification; only trust numbers listed on their official website.
  • Block the Number: Prevent future calls by blocking 03 9020 2280 / 0390202280 using your phone settings.
  • Report the Incident: Notify the relevant authorities, such as Scamwatch or your local consumer protection agency, to help track and potentially stop the scammers.

I received a call from this number claiming to be from the CBA. CBA has no reason to call me since I do not have a CBA account. What's more, all my phone numbers are on the government's "do not call register," so any unsolicited calls are breaking the law.

Obvious scam, said he was from CBA. Give away was the Indian accdent as well as strange noise in the background. I was immediately suspicious and asked how I knew he was from the CBA. He replied by quoting the first 4 digits from my vard number (which was wrong). This was another red flag asd a genuine call will quote the last 4 digits (which as essentially random). Another red falg was that the scammer referred to my grey CBA card (very unusual). Just as I was about to engage in a long conversation and have some fun taking up as much of his time asd possible, he realised that I was on to him and promptly hung up.

Rang my mobile from (03)9020 2280 on 10/05/2024 and left message but it was a lady talking in what sounded like Mandarin, but just assumed scam and blocked number like calls like this.

Didn't answer. Did not even want to leave my voice with a potential scammer which can be used to harm me further - obviously my personal info has been exposed.

Thought "Why would I get a call from another state on a number that no one really has!"

Same as the others. A fellow who said he was with Visa Security Dept of ANZ claimed I had spent 800 buying an Apple product from Best Buys. As with the others, I don't bank with ANZ. He knew my first name.

Scammers. Pretending to be from ANZ saying that I spent $1000 on my debit card. I don't bank with ANZ.

Same - It’s an ANZ scam from a robot asking if I authorised $1600 transaction on an anz card.
