Uncovering the Reality Behind 03 9008 5190

The phone number 03 9008 5190 / 0390085190 has been flagged by multiple users as part of a scam operation, specifically leveraging spoofed Optus numbers. Reports indicate that upon answering, recipients are connected to a foreign call centre, often with a noticeable switch indicative of the call being routed. This deceptive practice draws in unsuspecting individuals, with callers using familiar company names to lure their targets.

Identifying the Scam

Victims describe an eerie familiarity when answering these calls, believing they are speaking to legitimate Optus representatives. However, the ruse quickly becomes apparent when attempting to return the call; a disconnection message suggests the number is, in fact, not in use.

This technique is part of a broader scam strategy known as "caller ID spoofing", where malicious actors disguise their actual numbers using those of reputable companies. In this case, the scam commonly seeks personal information or aims at financial deception. Given user feedback from February 2024, it's evident these scammers persistently change their numbers, frustrating efforts to block them effectively.

Protecting Yourself Against These Scams

To safeguard yourself from such fraudulent calls, consider the following tips:

  • Do not engage: If you suspect a scam, refrain from answering or returning the call.
  • Block the number: While they often change numbers, blocking can deter immediate re-engagement.
  • Use Reverseau: Conduct a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to check unfamiliar numbers before engaging.
  • Report the number: Notify your telco provider about suspicious calls to aid in identifying scam operations.
  • Inform friends and family: Share your experiences to raise awareness about these fraudulent schemes.

Conclusion

03 9008 5190 / 0390085190 is a clear example of how scammers exploit trust through spoofing reputable brands like Optus. By remaining vigilant and utilising tools in the community such as Reverseau, you can better navigate and mitigate the risks posed by these unwanted predators. Always remember to trust your instincts—if a call feels off, it's best to let it go unanswered.

Spoofed Optus numbers being used to scam - Telcos need to do more to stop this. You can hear the click/switch to an Indian call centre when you pick up. But should you ring back, the recording says this Optus number is disconnected. Blocking does nothing, they just ring on a diff spoofed number the next day. I know no-one that picks up an unknown number now... If no message left, it's suspect.

This number appears to be a spoofed Optus number that is being used for scamming purposes. I could hear the transition to what sounded like an Indian call center as soon as I answered. If I attempt to call the number back, I get a recording indicating that the Optus number is disconnected. Blocking these numbers seems ineffective, as they consistently call from different spoofed numbers the following days. Now, I know of no one who answers unknown numbers anymore; if they don’t leave a message, I assume it’s suspicious.
