Many Australians have reported receiving suspicious communications from the phone number 03 6173 7829, leading to a growing concern about its legitimacy. The overwhelming consensus among users highlights this number as part of a phishing scam explicitly designed to impersonate the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA). In the current digital landscape, where scams are commonplace, it’s vital to be aware and vigilant.

The specific nature of this scam involves messages falsely claiming to be related to security alerts for CBA accounts. Common reports describe alarmist texts implying unauthorized login attempts from locations like Auckland, New Zealand, urging recipients to call back urgently. Examples include messages stating, “A login was made from location: Auckland, NZ. If this was NOT you, please contact us urgently on +61361737829.” Another highlighted a fabricated message about a “PAYiD request” connected to an unknown entity, FM Cars Ltd, prompting users to call back.

This type of scam is often referred to as phishing, where scammers aim to trick individuals into revealing sensitive personal information or accessing a victim’s banking account by playing on their fears. Users have reported receiving such texts even when they do not have any accounts with CBA, further proving the deceptive tactics employed by the scammers. Through reverse phone lookup platforms like Reverseau, it's crucial to identify these numbers and inform others.

Users advised caution and advised to take the following steps if they receive a call or text from this number:

  • Do Not Call Back: If you receive a message prompting you to call, refrain from contacting the number directly, as it could lead to further scams.
  • Verify with the Bank: Always check directly with Commonwealth Bank or your bank before acting on any suspicious communications.
  • Report the Number: Users are encouraged to report this number to the relevant authorities or their bank, helping to combat this ongoing issue.
  • Spread Awareness: Inform friends and family about these scams to prevent them from falling victim.

As phishing scams become increasingly sophisticated, staying informed and cautious can help mitigate risk. If you encounter 03 6173 7829, treat it as suspicious and protect your personal information. Always remember, if in doubt, contact your financial institution directly using official channels. Together, we can reduce the impact of scams in Australia.

I received this message saying it was Commbank. It said, "COMM: Security code 190499 for PAYiD request to FM CARS LTD. Unexpected code? Please call us urgently on 0361737829. REF:CO9323."

I called & it said "Weclcome to Commwalth Bank, we are tranferring your call to a representative & then I hear the person you are trying to reach is unavailable".

I usually am extremely mindful I never click on links or call back but for some reasons I called the number. No information was taken off me. But was wondering if they could get access to the security code via my messages (if they are tech savvy)? Should I be worried?
