    Scammers - called them back and called them out - they blocked me now!

    The display on my mobile stated it’s a Hobart number. Trying to sell me solar panels, wanted info if I eligible for a Government rebate. I asked nicely to delete my number, as I am on a do not call register, they are breaking the law. How is it possible for these scammers to obtain numbers to give the impression it’s a local call. The list for blocked calls on my phone is getting longer, it’s useless as they change numbers.

    Rang at 1:05 pm on 29 August but didn’t leave an answer. I called back and got “the number you have called is unavailable”. Sounds a bit suspicious.

    They were trying to sell me a solar system thinking I was the home owner. Continued to push the issue after I had even told them it was government phone number for business purposes only.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
