    The ACMA is seeing a sharp increase in complaints about scammers impersonating staff from eBay. Be wary of callers claiming that money will be deducted from your account – this is a scam!

    The scammers generally use a recorded message to claim you have made a purchase and they need to charge your account. They are trying to gain access to your personal information.

    eBay does not ask its customers to disclose or verify sensitive or personal information over the phone. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately. If in doubt, hang up and contact eBay through its website.

    Scammers target everyone. Learn more about how to protect yourself from phone scams on the ACMA website or make a report to Scamwatch.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
