I have been on the Do Not Call Register for several years. In my experience legitimate Australian businesses, also dodgy and disreputable but AU-based like debt collectors, do respect the DNC register. But Indian scam call centers don't bother checking it so if you're on the register then all calls claiming to be from some business are fake.
Another number (02 7234 0741) tried to call and my phone marked it as a known spam number so I rejected the call. Then they called back ten minutes later from this number.
Again, the phone warned me this was a known spam number. This time I let it ring out, did not reject or block the call as this may inform them that someone is there and they might hope I'll answer the next call. I never will!
All the interstate landline calls I ever get are attempted fraud. So I never answer any number not in my contacts, or not known to me. I recommend you do the same. Don't abuse them, don't call back, don't do anything, just let it ring out so they get no response from you at all. The worst thing you can do is answer! That just guarantees they put you on "the list" to call again as your number is considered "live". Same if you use an app or reject the call - they get a busy signal which they take as an invitation to try again later.
