Introduction

The phone number 02 9497 5074 has recently come to light as a potential scam, primarily impersonating the National Australia Bank (NAB). This number has been flagged by numerous users who received messages claiming that their NAB accounts were compromised. If you receive a call or text from this number, it is essential to know how to deal with such situations effectively.

Classification of the Number

Based on user reports, 02 9497 5074 can be classified as a scam. The majority of reports detail alarming messages that falsely state that users' NAB accounts have been accessed from a location in Auckland, New Zealand. This tactic appears to be part of a phishing scheme aimed at stealing personal information or financial details.

The Scam In Detail

Typical messages from this number prompt an urgent response, including calls back to the number for further instructions. Many users reported experiencing similar fraudulent messages, stating things like:

  • "If this wasn't you, please call us urgently on 02 9497 5074 / 0294975074."

Many victors of this scheme don't even hold an account with NAB, which raises serious concerns regarding the validity of the sender. Additionally, some victims have reported following through with calls, only to divulge sensitive information, leading to unauthorized transactions.

Confirmed Scam Attempt via Text Messages

I have received two text messages from this number. The first asking me to confirm a passcode to authenticate a $600 account for Coles. I contacted the NAB who confirmed it was a scam. Sometime later, I then got a second text along the same lines. Then yesterday I got a third text. All three asked me to ring the number specified here. I've just checked it out and happy to have you confirm it as a scam. The thing that has me concerned is that I use that Bank Account very seldomly and usually to transfer money to my main bank. There are only two payments out from that account other than the transfers: one to my friend's bank and one to an electrician two years ago. It's almost as if someone (not my friend) has sold my mobile number and bank account to a third party.

    Title: Suspicious Bank-Related Call Attempt

When I answered the call, I heard recorded music on hold that sounded legitimate, like something from NAB. I also received the same text message from them. The caller then asked me which bank I use, but I refused to provide that information. They hung up shortly after. When I called the number back to report them, they simply hung up again. I strongly advise against calling this number back.
