    Been getting a few calls in last few days referring to a previous conversation and questions about my and my wife's occupations (they got it the wrong way round). Seems to be some "reduce your tax" scam. They keep persisting even after telling them to get lost. Presumably this fake number (obtained using the Optus *69#) is designed to bypass those who reject anonymous incoming calls.

    I answered a call from this number and Simon (with Indian accent) said that he was calling from Richmond Group and identified my first name. He said that I had previously told him I worked in xxxx area of occupation and said that I told him to call me back. He asked me to confirm if I remember that conversation and I told him that I do not remember any of it. When I asked what the call is about, he said that since I didn't remember he wants to refresh my memory and kept asking if I worked in that area of occupation. I kept refusing to answer his question but kept asking what he wanted. He said that he cannot proceed if I don't remember and he needs me to remember the previous conversation first, and he got abusive and called me 'stupid woman'. I then told him that I am unable to assist him further if he does not want to tell me what this call is about, and hung up.

    When I called back on this number, I got the Optus message that the number is no longer in use.

    I received a call from this number and when I ring it back a message says "Optus advises this number is no longer in use", seems to be some kind of caller id spoofing scammer.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
