Understanding 02 9153 8122: A Suspicious Caller

If you've recently received calls from 02 9153 8122 / 0291538122, you may be dealing with a suspicious situation. Reports suggest that the caller, claiming to be James Williams from Fairview HK Limited, is targeting individuals with investment proposals—specifically overseas shares. While the liaison might seem professional, the lack of an Australian Financial Services (AFS) licence raises significant red flags.

Analyzing the Caller

The conversations reported involve the caller conducting a soft probe into the victim's current investments. They often attempt to engage potential victims by offering seemingly attractive investment opportunities. However, those who have encountered this number have pointed out several alarming signs:

  • Unlicensed Operations: There is no record of Fairview HK Limited holding an AFS licence with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
  • Vcard Details: The caller provided a virtual card that appeared authentic but turned out to obscure the truth behind the operation.
  • Email Follow-Up: The caller mentioned sending an email which could be an effort to further manipulate or gain trust from the victim.

What To Do When Receiving Calls from Suspicious Numbers

It’s crucial to remain vigilant when dealing with unsolicited investment opportunities over the phone. Here are some practical steps to take:

  • Don’t Engage: If you receive a call from this number, it’s advisable not to engage further with the caller. Politely hang up if they persist with their pitch.
  • Verify the Company: Conduct thorough research. Using Reverseau’s Reverse Phone Lookup Australia service can help you find more information about the caller.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect foul play or a scam, consider reporting the matter to ASIC or your local consumer protection agency.

While it is always wise to consider investment opportunities, being alert to the signs of scams will help protect your financial well-being. If you ever feel uncertain, simply ask yourself, “Who called me Australia?”—and allow resources such as Reverseau to guide your judgment.

Received multiple calls from this number, when I answered was advised I was speaking to James Williams from Fairview HK Limited who was suggesting that I may be interested in investing on overseas shares in a company. He was attempting to find out what I currently invest in and when I didn't elaborate said that he will be sending me an email with the details - I have received the email which left a Vcard detail - the contacts details are all in Hong Kong. Have checked ASIC website and there is no AFS licence for the company or for the caller - despite his Vcard looking legitimate. I have responded on email seeking the AFS licence to see if this a legitimate caller.
