The phone number 02 9099 1741 / 0290991741 has made waves across Australia as a notable scam, posing as a call from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Many users have reported receiving alarming recorded messages from someone claiming to be "James Anderson," warning them of tax issues including claims and potential legal action under their name.

The Nature of the Scam

This particular scam involves callers impersonating ATO representatives, luring unsuspecting victims into fearing legal consequences for supposed tax evasion. The scammers instruct recipients to return calls to the mentioned number, which only serves to further their fraudulent agenda. • Report the Number: Alert local authorities or report the number on websites focused on scam tracking. Your warning can prevent others from falling victim.
  • Block the Number: Most phones offer an option to block unwanted numbers. Take advantage of this to keep your phone free from persistent scam attempts.

Conclusion

It is crucial to stay vigilant about phone scams, especially those involving government agencies like the ATO. Agencies like the ATO typically communicate through official letters and do not use aggressive phone tactics. Always remember: if it seems too alarming, it probably is—verify before you act. A man that got Indian or middle accent asked me to get a lawyer for the warrant at the local court.

Then I call back ATO, I ask ATO about the call but ATO didn't know about that so I report as SCAM.

Received this call at 10:16am on 15.09.17 - and as soon as I answer the phone (land line) a recorded message started playing claiming to be.

From the Australian Taxation Office - saying that someone has made a claim under my name (didn't say my name) and that this messages was not to be disregarded, also left this number - 02 9099 1741 - and his name JAMES ANDERSON - and to please return the call.

Sounds like a scam.
