Understanding the 02 9063 8888 / 0290638888 Scam

The phone number 02 9063 8888 / 0290638888 has recently come under scrutiny due to multiple reports from users in Australia identifying it as a scam caller. Those who answered the call reported interactions that suggested an attempt to deceive them into divulging personal information, showcasing red flags typical of a fraudulent operation.

Classification of the Call

Users have reported the caller impersonating an ETO officer, which has created confusion and alarm, especially amongst non-English speaking populations.

User Experiences

Feedback from users has varied but consistently indicates a troubling trend. In one instance, a caller identified as eTel falsely claimed the recipient had a registered mobile number with them. This interaction turned rude when the recipient's sarcastic response suggested participation in a fictitious "money laundering business." The abrupt termination of the call indicates the insincerity of the scam attempt.

Another user articulated that the individual on the other end had a Cantonese accent and claimed names and identities were being misused. They cautioned that this form of deception is meant to provoke fear, prompting the victim to act without rational thought, potentially allowing scammers to glean sensitive information.

How to Handle Such Calls

  • Do not engage: If the caller makes you uncomfortable, it’s best to hang up. Engaging with them may open the door for further probing.
  • Do your research: Use a service like Reverseau to verify the number. Tools such as Reverse Phone Lookup Australia can help identify dubious callers.
  • Report the number: Notify local authorities or consumer protection agencies to help protect others from falling victim to similar scams.

I answered this call, and they introduced themselves as eTel.

They told me that I have a mobile number registered with them, and asked me what the number is for.

I told them it is for a money laundering business, and if they were interested I could give them a discount.

They hung up straight away. Rude.

This is a Scam caller number hunting for mandarin speaking population.

- The scammer is having a Cantonese/Hongkong acescent when speaking mandarin.

- Pretending to be an ETO officer(which I have completely no idea what that means) saying someone is using your identity.
