Scam Details

Reports characterising 02 8823 8779 / 0288238779 as a scam revolve predominantly around phishing attempts. In the reviews dated back to early August 2023, individuals reported receiving automated or live calls focused on extracting sensitive information. One report highlighted a distressing tactic where the caller claimed an invalid transaction occurred on a Mastercard/Visa account, instructing the user to download remote access software, Anydesk, to "cancel" the transaction. This method pairs social engineering with alarming functionality, encouraging victims to unknowingly relinquish control of their computers.

Another alarming report involved the impersonation of the Commonwealth Bank, with one user noting they had no account with the bank. The caller, again with an Indian accent, requested verification of personal details. Such steering towards divulging confidential information only adds weight to the classification of this number as a scam.

I received a call claiming to be from Mastercard/Visa about an invalid transaction. The caller asked me to download Anydesk to cancel the transaction and take control of my computer, which is definitely a scam.
