Identifying Potential Spam Calls

The phone number 02 8530 5709 has been flagged by multiple users as a spam caller attempting to impersonate Telstra. According to recent reports, individuals have received persistent calls from this number claiming to be connected to internet services, raising significant concerns regarding the authenticity of this caller.

Nature of the Calls

In particular, on 07 January 2024, a user reported receiving a call where the caller claimed to be from Telstra concerning internet services. This call was accompanied by a lot of background noise and was followed by subsequent calls from different numbers, which indicated an organised scheme rather than a legitimate inquiry. Another user corroborated this experience on 18 April 2024, stating that this number gave the same spiel about internet problems but experienced unusual pauses and detected an accent that sounded foreign.

Plausible Reasons for Classification

  • Impersonation of a trusted company: The use of a reputable company’s name, such as Telstra, is a common tactic among spam callers to both gain trust and extract personal information from unsuspecting victims.
  • Repeated calls from different numbers: The portfolio of calls from 02 8530 5709 and subsequent numbers (like 02 8529 5706) suggests that this could be part of a larger operation to bypass call-blocking measures.
  • Evidence of poor call quality: The reports include indicators of typical telemarketing behaviour—background chaos, delays before speaking, and varied accents, which further classifies this incident as spam.

How to Handle Future Calls from This Number

If you receive a call from 02 8530 5709 or any number with a similar pattern claiming to be from Telstra or any service provider, it's prudent to:

  • Hang up immediately. Do not engage with the caller.
  • Do not provide any personal information. Legitimate companies will not ask for sensitive information in this manner.
  • Report the call. Use platforms like Reverseau to notify others about such untrustworthy numbers and protect fellow Australians from potential scams.
  • Consider blocking the number. If feasible, take preventive measures to stop further calls from multiple numbers.

Being aware and prepared can greatly reduce the risk of falling victim to these spam tactics. Perform a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia on unknown numbers to clarify who’s calling before you pick up. Stay safe and informed!

This number called me yesterday about the same topic, and there was a lot of background noise, along with a noticeable pause before the person began speaking. They had a foreign accent. This morning, they called again from a different number: (02) 8529 5706, but I decided not to answer.

I received a spam call from someone claiming to be from Telstra regarding my internet connection. After I asked them not to call again, they called me two more times using different phone numbers.
