Understanding the Scam Behind 02 8526 0505
The number 02 8526 0505 / 0285260505 has garnered attention due to several reports categorising it as a potential scam. Users have described experiences involving impersonation of institutions, particularly the Commonwealth Bank. If you receive a call from this number, it's crucial to stay informed and cautious.
What Users Are Saying
Reports indicate that the caller often claims to represent major banks or service providers, creating a facade of legitimacy. One user reported a call where the caller, presenting as a bank representative, inquired about an unauthorized payment of $400 to the USA and suggested methods of verification that could compromise personal information. This interaction reveals a classic tactic used by scammers eager to elicit sensitive details.
Breach of Trust: Signs of a Scam
- Pressure Tactics: The caller's insistence that urgent action is needed should raise red flags. Scammers often create a sense of urgency to manipulate the recipient into acting quickly.
- Requests for Personal Information: A legitimate representative will never directly ask for sensitive information over the phone. If asked about device types (like Android or iPhone), it is best to hang up.
- Aggressive Behaviour: Reports of abusive language when being questioned about their legitimacy further demonstrate the malicious intent behind the calls.
Recommended Actions
If you receive a call from 02 8526 0505:
- Do Not Engage: If you feel uncomfortable, hang up immediately. Engaging gives them information they can use.
- Verify Independently: If you think the call might be legitimate, contact the institution directly using official numbers listed on their website, not the number they provide.
- Block the Number: To avoid future calls, consider blocking the number after confirming it as a scam.

Left no message, assume another scammer. Number blocked.
The caller did not leave a message, which leads me to believe this is likely another scam number. I've blocked the number.
SCAM ALERT!! I received a call from someone identifying himself as "Frank" from "Telstra," who claimed there were errors with my internet connection. When I confronted him about the legitimacy of his call, he became verbally abusive!
Caller - Indian voice, good English and very polite - claimed to be from Commonwealth Bank asking if I'd authorised a payment of $400 to USA. Did I know anyone who might have been able to withdraw that money? The bank had put the payment on hold.
I got suspicious when the caller said there were two ways I could stop that payment. One was via mobile phone. The caller wanted to know whether I was using an Android or an iPhone. That's when I said I'd check directly with my bank and ended the call.
A clever scam but a scam all the same.
