Unmasking the Scam: 02 8317 4956

Receiving calls from unknown numbers can be unsettling, especially when they turn out to be scams. One such number that has raised red flags among Australian users is 02 8317 4956. Based on multiple user reports, it has been categorised as a scam call, specifically impersonating the well-known online payment service, PayPal.

The M.O. of the Caller

The users who answered the call described the scenario vividly. They reported hearing an automated robot voice claiming to be from PayPal, warning them about an "upcoming expense." Alarmingly, many users do not even have a PayPal account, which raises suspicions of this call being a spoof designed to fish for personal information or financial details.

Analysing the User Feedback

Feedback accumulated over time strengthens the classification of this number as a scam. For instance, reviews from early August confirmed it was an automated scam call. Another prominent user review from late September emphatically warned others to avoid the call, stating "Do not answer, block the number and delete." Such consensus reflects a clear intent to advise against engaging with this caller.

Understanding the Scam

This particular scam appears to leverage "social engineering" tactics, a common method used by scammers. By impersonating a trusted brand like PayPal, they aim to elicit a sense of urgency, encouraging quick action without critical thought. Victims of this scam may risk sharing sensitive information or even authorising unauthorised transactions.

How to Deal with Potential Scam Calls

If you find yourself receiving a call from 02 8317 4956 or any similar number, follow these prudent steps:

  • Do not engage: Avoid interacting with the caller.
  • Do not provide personal information: Legitimate companies will not ask for sensitive information over the phone.
  • Block the number: Use your phone’s blocking feature to prevent future calls.
  • Report the number: Consider reporting the call to relevant authorities or to community websites focusing on scam notifications.

In Conclusion

Stay vigilant against potential scams like those perpetrated through phone calls from 02 8317 4956. Using tools like Reverseau and conducting a Reverse Phone Lookup in Australia can help you identify suspicious numbers before they lead to unfortunate consequences. Remember, if it feels off, trust your instincts—don’t fall prey to these deceitful schemes.

The caller hung up as soon as Google Assistant answered. It seems they weren’t interested in speaking with me.

I received an automated call featuring a robotic voice claiming to be from PayPal, informing me of an upcoming charge. Since I do not use PayPal, I suspect this may be a spoofed number.

A company called Fortrade pops up online. It says it’s an investment company trading on FOREIGN EXCHANGE and CFD. If you click on it it leads you to a website where you have to REGISTER with an email address and a password. Once you press “ register” it gives you an error message and the registration process restarts. Then it gives you another error message and restarts the registration process again and this keeps happening until a warning from Apple says SOMEONE IS TRYING TO STEAL YOUR INFORMATION. Once you stop registering someone calls you on this number 0283174956 and another number 0283174950. Then a text message from “ FORTRADE” comes saying they tried to call you. There’s NO SENDER’s PHONE showing on the text message so you cannot block it. It looks like a scam because it doesn’t give you their phone number. This is the TEXT message: ‼️I tried to reach you earlier. Please check your email and let me know when would be a good time to call you. Contact me at ‼️ bit.ly/fortrade-contact ‼️ If you call the number in the link, all you get is a voicemail. No one actually answers.
