Understanding the 02 8091 5752 / 0280915752 Scam

The phone number 02 8091 5752 has been reported by multiple users as being linked to a fraudulent scheme involving fake eBay purchases. This typical email scam aims to confuse unsuspecting victims into believing they have made a purchase that they did not initiate. Scammers often use urgency to elicit a panic response from the recipient, prompting them to call the listed number for assistance.

How the Scam Works

Victims receive emails designed to mimic legitimate communications from eBay. These emails typically thank the recipient for their "purchase" of an item—often a popular product such as an iPad—and provide a call-to-action to contact the provided phone number if any issues arise. The objective here is clear: to trick you into calling and possibly exposing personal information or providing financial details to fraudsters.

User reports indicate that calls to this number often lead to unmasked call centre operations, further confirming the scam's operations are likely based outside Australia, specifically mentioning that calls were routed to Indian call centres. This method of operation is commonly employed by scammers to obscure their location and protect their anonymity.

Recognising the Signs of a Scam

To ensure you stay safe from potential scams like this, consider the following:

  • Check the Email Address: Email addresses that seem suspicious, such as those ending in free webmail services, are often indicative of scams.
  • Avoid Immediate Actions: Do not call numbers provided in unsolicited emails, as this can lead you directly to scammers.
  • Research the Number: Use Reverseau and platforms like Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to check if numbers have been reported before.
  • Stay Informed: Keep updated on known scams circulating within online marketplaces like eBay.

This number is associated with a fake eBay email sent to your email account stating the below:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for shopping on eBay! Your order is now confirmed. Please note the Pay ID EB653-BN29416as a reference for your records. If you did not place this order, please call us on +61(02) 8091 5752 to report this to our fraud protection team.

The order is then displayed. In my case an order of an iPad.

I've dialled the number and although it seems like a local Sydney number it is rerouted outside Australia, to what I assume is India. Dialled the number 6 times anonymously and it was answered by different people so its a scammers call centre.

Be aware to check any emails received that look suspicious. The easiest and best way to see is to check the senders email address. If it is sent from an iCloud email based address then its safe to say that its a scam and there's no need to follow up.

P.S. I'm still waiting on my iPad:P.

This number is listed on a scam email for a fake eBay purchase. It says thanks for your purchase (in my email it was apparently an ipad) and if there's any issue then call this number. I obviously didn't make any purchase and I wasn't charged anything, but this is a typical email scam designed to panic you into calling because you think someone has bought something with your money. Beware.
