The number 02 8091 5456 / 0280915456 has surfaced numerous times in user reviews as a persistent scam attempting to impersonate Telstra's technical department. Callers claiming to represent Telstra often resort to alarming tactics, suggesting that your account has been compromised.

Nature of the Scam

According to reports, individuals behind this number typically pose as Telstra representatives, stating that they are diagnosing security issues associated with your internet connection. Victims have reported receiving calls from individuals identified with common names such as "Nick Wilson" and "Jack William" who assert a need to access your computer for troubleshooting purposes.

Analysis of User Reviews

Throughout various user accounts from 2017, a consistent theme emerged: callers demand that individuals grant remote access to their devices or perform specific commands (e.g., pressing "Ctrl", "Windows Key", and "R"). This is often justified by claims of illegal hacking or corrupted network settings.

Why This is a Scam

The interaction tactics used by the callers are a hallmark of technical support scams. Real Telstra representatives will not ask for remote access to personal computers or sensitive information through such methods. Furthermore, those who have attempted to verify the caller's identity by contacting Telstra directly have found no records of these employees or calls associated with the alleged issues.

Had a call today quoting the 5456 number being referred to here. Same story for me, the only other comment I make (being non technical) is having been asked to read back each piece of data whether they are trying to do something with voice recognition.

We got a call from a guy saying he was from Telstra IT Dept. The caller ID on our phone showed he called from 02 9935 6871. He asked a few questions about our Internet connection and he sounded dodgy. I asked for his name and a return contact number so I could return his call. He said he was Jack William, employee number J9426, and his number was 02 8091 5456. He said he was located at 215 Miller Street, North Sydney 2060. I didn't return the call but he called me again after 5 mins. I terminated the call. Coincidentally, our Telstra wireless National Broadband Network did go off air shortly afterwards. I called Telstra and got sorted. They kindly ran a check on the employee ID number and, not surprisingly, confirmed that it did not exist. This is definitely a scam.

I got the same call today. He said he was from Telstra and said I could call him back on 0280915456 to verify he was from Telstra. He offered me his "Telstra employee I'd number". He said I had an issue with someone accessing my computer and getting my personal details. He wanted me to press ctrl, windows and r. I told him he was a scammer and he promptly hung up. I presume he was about to get me to run some kind of program. Does anyone know what program they are trying to get you to run? Presumably the program must already be on my computer if ctrl, window and are will run it?
