Identifying the Scam Behind 02 8007 4102

Have you received a call from 02 8007 4102 / 0280074102 and feel unnerved by the experience? You're not alone. User reports indicate that this number is associated with a suspicious activity designed to deceive individuals by impersonating major institutions, specifically Commonwealth Bank.

The Nature of the Scam

The calls from this number reportedly involve a high-pressure tactic where the caller claims to be from Commonwealth Bank, asserting that there's been an attempt to make an unauthorized transaction on the victim’s account. Scammers are exploiting personal details, such as the owner's name, to gain trust and create a sense of urgency.

Why the Classification as a Scam?

  • Identity Impersonation: Using the name of a reputable institution, such as a well-known bank, is a classic scam technique aimed at tricking unsuspecting individuals.
  • Lack of Account Activity: When the caller suggests urgent account actions while the individual hasn’t held an account for years, it raises red flags regarding the authenticity of the call.
  • High-pressure Tactics: The nature of the scam's urgency suggests a common ruse to spur hasty decisions, typical of fraud schemes.

How to Handle Calls from 02 8007 4102?

If you receive a call from this number, remember to:

  • Do Not Share Personal Information: Never provide your banking details, passwords, or any personal information over the phone.
  • Hang Up and Verify: If in doubt, it’s always a good practice to hang up and independently contact Commonwealth Bank directly via their official number.
  • Report the Scam: Consider reporting the incident to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or your local authorities.

Called me claiming to be from commonwealth bank and knew the name attached to my phone number. I’ve not had an active commonwealth bank account for over 2 years and they were claiming that someone tried to use my commbank card a few minutes ago for a large amount of money. Sounds like a scam to me. Odd that they knew my name though.
