Identifying the Scam from 02 8006 9496
The phone number 02 8006 9496 / 0280069496 has gained notoriety amongst Australian phone users as a source of fraudulent calls. Reportedly, it operates under the guise of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) along with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), aiming to scare individuals into giving up their personal information or money. Users have consistently described the call as a recorded message warning them of an impending arrest due to alleged tax evasion.
Reviews submitted on 26 September 2017 illustrate a common pattern: callers are greeted with frightening claims that a warrant for their arrest is in place, all subject to immediate action. The seriousness of the alleged situation goes as far as claiming that a significant tax debt is owed, and if not addressed quickly, could result in heavy fines and legal action.
Understanding the Scam Mechanics
Feedback from several individuals reveals that once they connected with a live person after responding to the voicemail, they encountered a scripted scam designed to panic victims into thinking they owe money. Details such as an arbitrary sum of money—reported to be $7,985—are whipped up to mislead call recipients into believing they face real consequences if they do not act soon. Parameters of the scam include:
- A false sense of urgency with threats of legal repercussions.
- High-pressure tactics to convince the victim to pay a specified "fee" to resolve the fictitious charges immediately.
- Instructions to visit a bank or use less conventional methods to make the payment.
Taking Precautions Against Scams
It’s crucial to remain calm if you receive a call from this number or similar ones. Here are steps you should follow:
- Do not engage with the caller or provide any personal information.
- Do not feel pressured to make any payments over the phone.
- Contact relevant authorities, such as the actual AFP or ATO, to verify any claims of unpaid taxes.
- Report the number as a scam using services like Reverseau, which provides a Reverse Phone Lookup in Australia.
In summary, the number 02 8006 9496 / 0280069496 is associated with a malicious scam that attempts to exploit people's fears about legal action from government organisations. Stay informed, trust your instincts, and remember—if something sounds too ominous to be true, it probably is.

A recorded message stating it was from the ATO and there is a warrant for my arrest, I will be arrested with in 72 hours (enough time to flee the country haha) however it did concern me and I rang the number to be received by two Indian accents on the other end, the first voice said.
That l had not paid my taxes and when l said I had he said that l had been audited and it was found that l had $ 7985.00 owing ?? if so desired that l could fight it in court that I should get a attorney to represent me, if l lost that l probably would be fined up to 10x that amount plus court costs (These cons use scare tactics and my alarm bells have been ringing from the start, l thought now l will go for the ride, l wanted to see where this is going) in short second person now comes on the line "the supervisor"we talk he saids that he can cancel the court case for a fee of $2000.00 payable immediately. (hello hello this is it) not payable by internet banking but that I need to go to the bank "NOW" and that he will give me the details of where to send it when I get there. And so this is how the scam goes, hope this is helpful. Oh and they are very well rehearsed.
