Understanding the Threat of 02 8005 1412
The phone number 02 8005 1412 / 0280051412 has emerged as a significant concern for individuals across Australia. Reports indicate that this number is associated with a scam where callers impersonate employees from Telstra’s Technical Department, misleading potential victims with alarming threats regarding their internet connection.
How the Scam Works
Users have recounted experiences of receiving calls from this number, where the callers, often displaying an Indian accent, claim that the victim's internet service is under threat due to alleged hacking activities. They typically warn that immediate disconnection is imminent unless corrective actions are taken on the victim's computer.
Upon closer inspection of various user experiences, it is clear that the moments of panic cultivated by these scammers lead unsuspecting callers to follow instructions that could compromise their personal information and device security. This false urgency is a common tactic in many phishing scams.
Why You Should Be Cautious
As indicated in a review dated 30th May 2017, victims quickly recognised the red flags when the caller asked for remote access to their computers. Instead of compliance, they reported the incident to Telstra’s scam hotline, who confirmed that such scams are prevalent, but often difficult to trace due to the use of overseas calling techniques.

This is a scam, be aware..!!
We received a call evening of 25th May from a lady (with Indian accent) posing as an employee from Telstra Technical Department advising that our internet was going to be disconnected immediately due to our internet being hacked on a daily basis.. We were immediately suspicious as our internet is through a different provider but we didn't mention that just to see how far this conversation would go.
When we questioned this situation the lady hung up but then called back after 5 or so minutes.. She offered that in order for us to prevent the disconnection from happening to jump on our computer and follow her instructions. We obviously didn't follow her instructions as it was clear that this was a scam.. We questioned her some more and also asked for her name and number so we could call back when my brother came back home (as he's more technically minded) and at that point she hung up again.. No call back..
I called Telstra's scam and phishing line to report this and they advised that they are aware of such situations and because calls are made from overseas using internet telephone numbers they unfortunately cannot be traced..
