    Same automated message on answering machine as others. If I hadn't already had a similar call last year and rung the real Tax Office about it I would have been worried. Pity other people who get sucked in by it.

    Received message asking to ring this number quoting WX2754 accusing un-named person of tax fraud. Threatened with warrant for immediate arrest. Sounded like 'automated' voice. Thank God for internet where I could check it out - nearly had a heart attack!

    Yes, same thing happened to me. David Brown" (with a thick accent) called me and tried to heavy me about a tax audit they'd done done and found I owed more than $4000. Said three registered letters had been sent and I'd not responded to any of them. Bank accounts would be frozen etc. That they provided case reference numbers etc threw me off initially but the longer the call went the more suspicious I got.

    A client got a phone call from this number this morning and quote the exact phone number and reference number (WX2754). Advised her that ATO will never threaten tax payer though phone. If ATO take legal action they will send out letter, or at least contact the tax agent first.

    I've been scammed by this lot before. I rang back and he gave a name Paul Smith from the tax department. I told him I was going to call a solicitor and wad hung up on. They got six hundred dollars last time. So they don't even keep a record of who they've previously scammed. Why isn't something done about them. And the ones I've encountered seemed to be Indian.

    Call recorded on answering machine (I always vet the calls) was same as for others - man's voice educated Oz accent, saying from ATO, gave fake reference number, problems with ATO record, threatened coming with warrant for arrest etc. Gave this number to call. Then said "don't ignore" at end. No names given etc. Obvious scam, but threatening arrest & other legal action is serious.

    I live in SA. I received the call from my landline. I don't give and don't use my landline number so im used to the calls from sales. So I let the answering machine answer. Then I got the same message about ATO and an arrest for a legal complaint. My impulse is to Google it right away because I felt it is a scam. Im relieved to see the above comments too.

    Yet another attempt at scare tactics trying to suggest you are in trouble.. These guys really are pretty stupid.

    It would serve no purpose to highlight all the aspects that identify this to be fraudulent as it may give them ideas to update their tactic... But ill simply suggest this.. If this was real then.

    1) they would not use a recorded message.

    2) they would use your name on such a serious matter.

    Just ignore it.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
