Mixed Activity on 02 7258 2993

The number 02 7258 2993 (also written as 0272582993) shows a complex pattern across eight community reports. One contributor confirmed a serious Optus phishing attempt, another verified a legitimate Amplifon hearing clinic callback after persistent calls, while the remainder describe robocalls, voicemails with repeated hellos, and unidentified missed calls. This mixed profile suggests the number may have been compromised, spoofed, or is genuinely used by multiple organisations.

Confirmed Scam: Optus Phishing Attack via 0272582993

One contributor reported receiving a call from 02 7258 2993 claiming to be from Optus. The caller sent a two-factor authentication code, but the contributor noticed the code actually arrived from Yahoo, indicating an attempt to access their Yahoo email account. This phishing tactic combined Optus impersonation with credential harvesting, making it a high-risk interaction. The contributor did not proceed with entering credentials.

Legitimate Use: Amplifon Hearing Services Callbacks

Despite the concerning reports, one contributor called back 0272582993 after several attempts and reached a genuine Amplifon representative. The contributor confirmed they had attended a hearing checkup previously, and the persistent calls from 02 7258 2993 were follow-up appointments reminders because they had not been seen in a long time. This legitimate context explains why Amplifon or an associated service provider may be using this number, though the persistent calling pattern without clear identification initially appeared suspicious.

Robocalls and Silent Voicemails from 02 7258 2993

One report describes a 45-second voicemail from 0272582993 consisting of repeated hellos followed by disconnection. This robocall pattern is common in scam campaigns or telemarketing operations that use automated dialling to identify active phone numbers. Another report mentions a voicemail claiming to be from Bay Audio, a hearing service provider, but without further context about the interaction.

Unidentified Missed Calls and Uncertain Reports

Four contributors reported missed calls from 02 7258 2993 without messages, often blocking the number without further investigation. One contributor noted that Reverseau showed seven searches on this number in a single day, which they interpreted as a sign of scam activity, though search volume alone does not confirm intent. These uncertain reports lack sufficient detail to categorise the number definitively.

What to Do If You Receive a Call from 02 7258 2993

Given the mixed reports on 0272582993, exercise caution but verify before assuming fraud.

  • Do not: Share personal details, enter PINs or passwords, or click links sent during or after the call, especially if the caller claims to be from Optus, a bank, or government agency
  • Do: Let unknown calls go to voicemail; if the caller claims to be from a service provider (Optus, Amplifon, etc.), hang up and call the official customer service number from your bill or their website
  • Do: Ask for a callback number and verify it independently before returning the call
  • If persistent: Block the number if calls continue without clear identification

Claimed to be from Optus, sent 2-factor code but it was from Yahoo, trying to hack my emails

After numerous calls, I called back the number and persisted until someone answered. It did turn out to be Amplifon and I can confirm I had a hearing checkup while ago.

Amplifon persistently calling my number made it look like a scammer call. But in the end was just a follow up call as I had not been attended to in a long time.
