    I received a call from this number (10/20015). I was told that I had defrauded ATO of nearly A$6700. That there were court proceedings against me. I was completely surprised (being a lawyer), as I would have thought that I would have received at the very least a letter of demand. So I asked him if that was right and since I was charged with very serious offences (the caller made it sound like I had committed treason), then why did not receive anything in writing? To that he said that they had sent two letters to my home address(which he had got right) and there was no response.

    After the initial shock/surprise wore off (in about 2 mins), I got very suspicious and started to dig more and more for information. He got aggressive and told me he was hanging up the phone! He did hang up the phone. I called back and it took someone ages to answer the phone. Got a Daniel who said that he was with ATO Crime Branch (weird never heard of that).

    Summary - it's a scam.

    Just got a phone call from a 'Benny Wilson' and 'Paul White' (asian and indian accents respectively) saying they were from the ATO and that we owed $6.800 and that they would send the police if we didn't transfer money.

    They had our full names but the incorrect mailing address (and then claimed they had the wrong person).

    They gave me a Sydney address despite having a number starting with '6'.

    This appears to be a telephone number associated with a scam or fraudulent activity. The caller represents himself as calling from the Australian Taxation Office and demands that money is transferred to them as payment of income tax debt. He gets a bit aggressive and advises the receiver of the call not to tell anyone that he called!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
