This is a scam.
Received call yesterday evening 7/9/15 from a person with an almost unintelligible accent.
Gist of conversation was that unless I acted immediately I would be arrested for tax evasion and tax fraud.
After talking for a few minutes I realised that it was a scam and hung up.
I contacted the ATO and let them know about the call. They confirmed that it was a hoax.
Received another call from the same people today on voice mail with the same message.
I had the same call claiming I was about to be arrested for tax fraud and needed to call back. I also had 6 other messages that were hangups. This has got to be a scam as the ATO would send a letter not call.
Had this message left on the National Broadband Network phone number that is listed as silent - stating "this is Mark from the Australian Taxation office. We have received a legal partition for legal litigation against you (no name mentioned) for tax fraud. Before this goes to the commonwealth courthouse or you get arrested call us on 02 61403496".
This person did not speak clear english and others could be heard in the background.
I believe they are using the 02 so that people think it is Canberra. This is a scam.
I think this is one of the ATO scammer numbers.
