Understanding the Threat from 02 6140 3484

In recent years, numerous reports have surfaced about a phone number that has alarmed many Australians: 02 6140 3484. Identified as part of a series of scam calls impersonating the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), this number has preyed on fear and misinformation, leading unsuspecting individuals to believe they are facing severe legal consequences.

How the Scam Operates

Victims of this scam have recounted distressing messages left on their answering machines, stating that legal action would be taken against them for tax fraud or evasion. The callers often demand immediate contact and payment to avoid arrest, creating a sense of urgency designed to exploit fear. These messages frequently lack personal identifiers—no names are provided—and are often delivered in poorly articulated accents, further signalling their fraudulent nature.

User Reports: A Clear Pattern

User feedback indicates a clear classification for 02 6140 3484: it is a scam. Highlights from various reports include the following:

  • Callers impersonate individuals from the ATO, often with unconvincing accents.
  • Threats of legal action, including claims of imminent arrest and large fines, are common tactics.
  • Disguised silence or non-responsive dialogue when attempting to call back the number raises further suspicions.

The overall sentiment from these users suggests an increasing awareness of the tactics employed by such scammers, as many have wisely chosen to contact their accountants or the ATO directly for verification rather than responding to threats.

Protect Yourself from Scammers

Receiving a call from 02 6140 3484 / 0261403484 can be alarming, but there are proactive measures you can take:

  • Do not give personal information. Legitimate organisations will never ask for sensitive details over the phone.
  • Verify before contacting. If unsure, contact the organisation directly through official channels, like their published phone numbers.
  • Report the scam. Notify the ATO or local authorities about the attempts you’ve experienced. Such reports help them track and combat these criminal behaviours.
  • Use services like Reverseau to identify potential scams effectively; a reverse phone lookup can help you determine who has called.

Conclusion

The reporting on 02 6140 3484 / 0261403484 exemplifies the sophistication scammers use to manipulate individuals using fear and misinformation. By maintaining vigilance and employing healthily sceptical practices, you can protect yourself and others from becoming victims. Just got a call from some Indian guy claiming I had a tax fraud against my name. When I asked him why his company wasn't listed in Google he hung up. SCAM!

Had a call from these guys claiming to be the ato like the other people on here. Called the ato scam line and reported them. Would encourage anyone else to do the same.

Just picked up messages off the answering machine to find this exact scam caller threatening us with prosecution. To be frank it was the accent that made me very suspicious. Thank goodness for services like this one - caller left 02) 6140 3484. Hope the police are being advised!

My wife was called an hour ago with the same lines everyone else has reported. This is a scam, the ATO will write to you and not call you out of the blue. Also if your accountant does your tax they will get the correspondence first. What an a$$hole!

K

Sounded like a recording saying I was in trouble for tax evasion and I can expect a summons to court if I don't ring the number back immediately. Of course I didn't ring it back. The caller had an accent.

I was told not to contact my accountant not to tell anyone about this but to borrow $90.000 or I would be put in jail for 5 years.

Also got a voice message from this number (02) 6140 3484 saying something about tax evasion and fraud. I was scared at first but decided to return the call. I refused to give them my name as I thought they should have my details, he got angry and hung up on me. Hungry fools/Bloody Scammers!

We got a message left on voice mail, regarding tax fraud and evasion, saying a case was being lodged and to call back or there will be consequences.

Bunch of fools. I pity those who believe these jokers.

Just got a call from these guys via a message this afternoon - thought it sounded weird so Google this number - happy to see looks like a scam, weird Pilipino accent, same story as others advising a legal case pending... After I got over the shock realised all my tax info is via my accountant so the ATO would be calling them first... Not me !!

Just listened to my messages to receive this ridiculous accent saying that there is a Legal petition notice in place for tax evasion and fraud and to phone them back on this no. Asap as the federal police are involved. What a bunch of Nutters... As if this no. Is not going to be reported as Scam!

I just got a call on my answering machine and thought what a load of rubbish... It's sad that these people can get money from vulnerable people they need to be stopped...

B

I got three calls, I missed all of them so got the messages, it did stress me out for a second until I realised no one from the ATO would leave a dumb message like this. I feel sorry for elderly people though who might not realise...

Just got a message from this number rang the Ato and they advised it is a scam.

J

Got a voicemail from them this morning too. Agree with Shaun - terrible Irish accent. Feel very sorry for vulnerable people who get this type of call. It would be very frightening for them as the message raised my blood pressure before I realised it was a scam - my accountant handles all my tax! Have blocked their number.

Yep we just got a call at our office stating the name Rob Bennett as well.

Also that it was time sensitive - they left two messages with the second one stating that we've now made them angry.

We called back and it was answered ATO. We asked where the office was based - they said Canberra and we asked if they could look out the window and advise what the weather was like in Canberra today... They hung up.

Just got the same call/message today at my place of employment! Hope these guys are stopped soon.

2 numbers.2 mwssages:

0261403484 & 0261403484.

Contact them before "this case gets legally tough for you".

Terrible fake Irish accent.

Other guy gave his name as Roger Bennet.

The give away is that I haven't committed a tax fraud. Oh, and that the ATOs contact for me is my accountant.

Might give them a call back tomorrow & have some fun.

C

Received a voice message threatening us with legal action for tax fraud and stated he was from the ATO.

I have received 2 threatening phone calls from 02 61403484 and 02 61403463 threatening legal action by ATO for fraud and tax evasion. The caller had an accent which indicated his first language was not English. Hope they get caught.

My wife just called me that we have a message on the answering machine that we would have to call this number immediately to avoid court action.

Same as previous comments. Rude, not providing details and not in a professional English.

Thanks for your comments. I also assumed it's spam.

Any potential legal action would come in writing.

I have had two messages left on my answering machine now threatening that 'my name' had a case lodges against it for tax evasion and tax fraud and that a warrant was going to issue from both the commonwealth AND local police and I or my 'attorney' had to ring a number straight away before things got 'legally difficult' for me. Numbers were 0261403484 and 0261403463.

G

Scam artist but getting close to the ato s level.

We received a call threatening my husband with an arrest warrent if he did nnot pay $12.000.00 to the ato. When my husband went to CBA with the cash, they opened a CBA account and told him to deposit the cash. They kept him on the phone for over an hour and when he felt something was not quite right he hung up and went to the police who advised this us a scam. My husband is a very clever man and they almost had him. Just hang up and call the ATO or whoever they say they are from and check it out.

Just got urgent sounding call on our answering machine leaving this number, supposedly the ATO coming to get us for tax fraud. No names given, neither our names or his, I won't be calling them back and providing them with any info. Obvious scam.

C
Camille

I too got a phone call last night from the same number. Stating he was from the ATO.

No identifying name given, very aggressive and rude his English was very poor and at times hard to understand.

I tried ringing it this morning but just rung out.

C
Crowl

Received the same message on my landline stating that I needed to contact the ATO on this number before the Federal and local police served a warrant on me for tax fraud and tax evasion. I ignored it immediately as a scam as such a crime would certainly not be dealt with initially over the phone. The messenger had a real Cockney accent.

C
Chhabra

Same thing, had a message when I got home from work advising warrant had been issued in my name (although no name was used in the message) by the ATO for tax evasion. I called the number at 6am, got silence for about 30 seconds then there is a recorded message in a foreign language. Definitely not the ATO.

Identified in a recorded message in which the caller threatens legal action on behalf of ATO. Obviously a scam as per 0261003020. See scamwattch website.
