    Had a message left today (16th June). Peter Williams from ATO regarding "error in tax obligation" then went on to mention court action etc. I decided to ring this number and someone else attended the call and asked what my name was. I am a carer for my elderly parents and so I informed him I would not give out the home owners name in case this was a scam (as they had not mentioned the name on the message bank of who they were trying to contact) He immediately hung up. Phone number as above.

    Call left on answering machine, from office of Peter Williams of the ATO, claiming 'they have identified some error in (my) tax obligation and are on the way to submitting a formal petition again my name and before it get's to the 'Commonwealth Courthouse of the old territory, please call the hotline number (02 6140 3470) so they can assist". I then called the official ATO switchboard (13 28 69) and they said to ignore this as it's a scam.

    I just got a message left on my answering machine to the same effect, ie an ATO rep calling himself Peter Williams but with a heavy European accent and suggesting the ATO was about to take action because of a tax irregularity. I was suspicious because firstly he didn't identify which person was the subject of the complaint and secondly the tax office would not I think make phone calls to broach such a problem, it would be by letter on letterhead.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
