Understanding the Scam Behind 02 6100 4075
The phone number 02 6100 4075 / 0261004075 has repeatedly surfaced in user reports as a source of fraudulent activity. Callers claiming to represent the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) are offering enticing grants, leading many to suspect a sophisticated scam operation.
The majority of user feedback identifies a trend: individuals were contacted by males with Indian accents stating they were from the ATO, and astonishingly, that they were entitled to grants of $6,500 simply for being good citizens or paying tax on time. Intrigued recipients were often provided with a PIN and directed to call back at the same number.
Identifying the Scam
This scam is classified as a 'government impersonation scam,' where fraudsters aim to exploit trust in governmental entities like the ATO. Key characteristics that reveal this as a scam include:
- Promises of free money without any prior application or eligibility screening.
- Urgency associated with providing personal or payment details via phone.
- Requests to make donations or payments to obtain promised funds, often linked to charitable organisations.
Experiences of Victims
Victims reported receiving unsolicited calls, often receiving similar scripts of rewards for 'good behavior'. After a few snags such as evasive answers and recording-only responses, users realised the unlikelihood of receiving any genuine settlement from a government body over the phone.
One notable experience involved a person being told they had to donate a sum to UNICEF before their funds could be processed. The instruction to perform this transaction via cash, particularly signalling a Western Union transfer to an overseas address, highlights the red flags indicative of a scam.

Thought I would post this in case anyone actually wonders what the scam involves-.
I received the same call from a man with an Indian accent from the government of Canberra - etc etc. I'd been awarded an appreciation grant of $6.500 and to call 02 6100 4075 and give them the pin they had just given me. Anyway so I called it and a woman answered "Australian Taxation Office" and gave me the same blurb. Then she said she'd give me a 6 digit code. I had to go to any CBA, NAB or ANZ bank, tell the manager my code and he would give me a cheque for $6.500. She didn't want any of my bank or personal details - she was sure to tell me. However, the government had nominated UNICEF to whom I had to give a donation of at least $270 before they could give me this secret code. The code was so secret that it could not be shown on their systems until I had paid this donation - then they would immediately give me a receipt number and my secret code. In order to pay UNICEF, I had to take cash to the post office and when I was there, phone her and she would help me fill in the form. I said I didn't have a mobile phone so she would have to give me the details now. So it was the "yellow Western Union Money Transfer form I needed. To be addressed to Robert Gibson at 35 Ringroad 110063 Delhi India" If I was asked if he had correct ID to collect the money, I should say yes and if I was asked if I had done this before, I should say yes. Anyway I let her get to the end of giving me all of the details, then I launched into my own very calm and measured tirade at her about the wrongs of doing this to unsuspecting people, I was sorry she had found herself in a position to be doing this to people but I hoped that she would see the light one day... Karma was mentioned too.
A man with an indian accent rang my business saying because we always pay on time to the Aust Gov. We will be granted $6500.00 then he gave me a id number and phone number to call (02) 6100 4075.. He then went on and asked how many family members are in my family & when I said this is a company and has nothing to do with my family he kept telling me he is trying to conduct a survey. I hung up and about 45mins received the same phone call with the same guy.
Same as the above, cause I'm generally a good person they want to give me $6500 and gave me this number to call. They are using a phone book listing as they had name and address details. Called himself David Black. He got a bit funny when I laughed at him as the Tax department would never give back money they didn't have too. I don't think they are going to catch too many people out with this scam. Everyone knows the tax dept aren't that generous.
An indian fellow named John Parker from the Varification Office asked me to call the Accounts department on 02 6100 4075 to collect my $6500 for being a good citizen. The scary part is the background noise sounded like a noisy call centre which makes me wonder how big is this scam?
Idiots tried to scam me. I recorded the conversation and forwarded the recording and details to Crime Stoppers, Scam Watch and the NSW Police.
I confirmed with one of the con artists that she was indeed in Sydney. A recording of the commission of a felony in Australia? She is gonna be f*ked.
Received a phone call from a gentleman with an Indian or similar accent. Seems the ATO wants to give me $6.500 because I'm really good fellow. Gave me a number to call (0261004075) as well as a PIN. I for one know I'm a good fellow, so I called the number. Only got a recorded message saying no one available, please leave a message. Damn, I really wanted to know how this one was supposed to work.
Same here. I called the number to see where it leads to, she started saying something about giving me a pin number to take to any bank, then got disconnected. I would have liked to know how this scam worked but don't think it's worth it. If someone knows pls post here. tks.
I also received a call from the same number saying I am entitled for $6500 for being paying tax on time. The indian guys claimed that he is from the tax department. When I asked for further details he hang us. It seems like a fake call.
Received a call from a man with an indian accent saying he was from the taxation department and I qualify for a $6000 grant basically for not being in disput with the tax office and for not having a criminal record. He told me to ring the senior accounts department on 0261004075 and they would arrange for me to receive the grant.
