    Got a call saying they're from the ATO and that there's a "time sensitive personal matter" that needs my urgent attention. Can anyone spell "dodgy"?

    They are now calling business numbers saying the ATO is doing an audit. Dodgy as. It is clearly an automated interpreter because the language is off and the intonation is just like you get on an automated payment service.

    I just received a call from a number claiming that I had won a $4200 from the Australian Federal Government and was asked to call 02 61003390 and give some personal details so that the money could be transferred to me via moneygram. Apparently the Australian Federal Govt has selected 12 tax payers to win a Christmas bonanza!!! When I asked if it is a scam, I was told that the person was not authorized to give all details as the conversation was recorded, but the superviser on the above number would be able to reassure me that it isn't a scam!! Obviously, I'm not calling the number as I never applied for any grants in the first place!

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
