    Automated message claiming to be from the ATO, but it was clearly a scam. Don't bother picking up.

    Called me, I didn’t answer. They left a voicemail saying I can be jailed for “tax avoidation” (don’t think that’s a word).

    Obvious scam.

    Scammers - Automated message, female voice, claiming to be the ATO and that I was to be potentially arrested for tax avoidance. Called the ATO to confirm that it was not them. Advised to fill out a report for ATO about the scam: [link].

    Automated message scam - claiming from ATO / Arrest warrant etc.

    I pressed 1 to connect me to a person - it was a Nigerian accent and I asked "are you really from the tax office?" His response was "I am really from the tax office honey" when I told him that if he really worked for the Australian Tax office he wouldn't be calling me honey - he laughed while I used some colourful language towards him and hung up.

    DO NOT give them your name or ANY personal information. It is a scam.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
