Understanding the Scam

The calls often adopt a sense of urgency, demanding immediate action while causing undue stress. Reviewers have noted messages that are poorly edited, often invoking fear by misleading victims into believing they face serious legal repercussions.

Victims Share Their Experiences

User reviews indicate that these scams often use generic names and fabricated scenarios, including threats about police involvement over unresolved tax issues. The call typically drops vague hints about a supposed investigation while asking for sensitive banking information or immediate cash settlements, which is a common tactic used by scammers.

How to Handle Calls from This Number

  • Do Not Engage: If you receive a call from this number, do not interact with the caller. Hang up immediately.
  • Verify Independently: If you're concerned about your tax status, contact the ATO directly through official channels to confirm if there are any legitimate issues.
  • Report the Incident: Notify the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) of the scam call to help protect others from falling victim.
  • Stay Informed: Use resources like Reverseau and conduct a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to identify unknown callers before responding.

Got a missed call from this number at 11am 06/10/2015. When I retrieved the voicemail, an electronically recorded voice stated to be from the ATO. It was also from detective John Smith on behalf of the ATO over tax matters. Dick heads.

I had this number call me today claiming to be from ATO and to call back or face the consequences or ave my solicitor or representative call back. Luckily my wife googled the number and saw how many other people had received the same call.

Got a missed call from this number at 1pm 06/10/2015. When I retrieved the voicemail, an electronically recorded voice stated to be from the ATO. I was instructed to return the call or face the consequences. Apparently I was being investigated by a detective John Smith on behalf of the ATO over tax matters. Incidentally, my tax return was lodged this morning. I'm aware of this scam. Saw it on TV the other week. I wonder how many poor individuals have been conned so far?

I received two calls from this number, however I could not hear any one speaking. It is interesting to note others' comments in reference to calls from this number purporting to be from the ATO. Just yesterday and I submitted my e-tax lodge ent online and I wonder if it is coincidental that I received this spam call.... In other words, some hacking or shifty business could be going on that those contacted may have recently submitted a tax lodgement. Please confirm if you received a call from this number shortly after you submitted an e-tax lodgement online.

Same phone call, missed the call and got a voicemail with an out if sync/badly edited electronic voice saying vague things about tax fraudulence and not to ignore the message. It's not the way the Australian Tax Office leaves messages so I wasn't planning to return the call.

Just got a call from this number, they left a recorded message saying they were from the ATO and I was fraudulent and had to ring them back asap.

When I did someone read out a lot of nonsense, told me to write down a number and that his name was Ray Hamilton. He said that they have to look at all my accounts for the years 2008 to 2012 and they wanted to know all my banking details or if I thought my fraudulence had been a human error I could just pay $1700 something. When I said I wouldn't because the guy couldn't tell me my full name he told me the police would come within half an hour and I have to go to court. Seriously... How dumb do they think people are???
