Understanding the Call from 02 6100 3071
The number 02 6100 3071 / 0261003071 has been reported numerous times by concerned Australians, with a consensus label of 'scam'. The calls typically claim to originate from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), frightening recipients with allegations of tax fraud investigations. However, this number is part of an elaborate phishing scam designed to extract personal and financial information.
What Makes It a Scam?
User reviews showcase a clear pattern. Callers often receive an automated message suggesting that they have committed tax fraud or are involved in a legal case related to their taxation. Such tactics aim to instill fear, as they warn about potential legal consequences.
Characteristics of the Scam:
- Automated Voice Message: The calls feature a robotic voice with a non-Australian accent, raising immediate suspicion.
- No Direct Contact: Legitimate ATO communications begin with a written notice, not an unsolicited call.
- Pushy Tactics: The messages may include threats of arrest or legal action if the recipients do not act quickly.
- Reverse Phone Lookup: Searches for the number generally return scam alerts, confirming its dubious reputation.
How to Handle Such Calls
If you receive a call from this number or one that resembles it, here are some steps you should take:
- Do Not Engage: If you answer the call, avoid providing any personal information.
- Hang Up: The safest course of action is to end the call immediately.
- Report the Scam: You can report the number to the authorities such as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
- Verify Independently: If you are concerned about your tax situation, contact the ATO directly using the official contact details found on their website.
Staying Safe from Phone Scams
As scams continue to evolve, staying informed is crucial. Utilise services like Reverseau or reverse phone lookup Australia tools to identify phone numbers before giving out personal information. Remember, if it sounds suspicious, it's better to be cautious than to risk falling victim to fraud. Always strive to verify the legitimacy of an unknown caller associated with sensitive topics like taxes.

What Our Users Reviewed
If the ATO has an issue with your TAX be it personal or business they will inform you by letter which includes a document ID number. They will not contact you using an automated recording (with an Indian accent).....
If you are unsure Google "Australian Taxation Office" and contact them using the details on their website.
They left me a message saying this - It was funny I had no imports.
Hello. I am calling you from Australian Taxation Office. We were trying to reach you in regards to an import(?).
Fake ATO call this afternoon (08/09/2015) 3:59pm WST. What can we do to shut this off before someone falls to this?
They got me too...
Today (8/9/2015) at about 4pm, I missed the call then heard the message...
Paniced a bit as my tax return is very late ;).
Then found this site...
Thanks!
They must have been busy today. I came home to a voicemail message from them. You'd have to be mad to fall for it. That voice! I just deleted it.
I missed a call from this number today. Glad to hear it's a scam, because I had had some issues with my taxes and might have fallen for it. (Probably not though).
Yep, almost handed my C/Card number over to a random caller? These guys must be crazy to think they can make money this way.
"Claiming they are from ATO fraud investigation unit? Need me to pay a debt of $1800 or so for a tax miss calculation over the past 5 years? I could sort it out right now with a credit card number or they will have to issue a court summons?".
Hope you send it to the right address pal!!
Got the call 3:57 Victoria time, missed the call. Got the robot voice. Paniced a bit before thinking about it. Thanks for this page though, calmed me down a bit.
Somehow they knew my old address and then informed me that I owed the ATO $1.400. I then asked who I was speaking with and he said "Osama Bin Laden". He then hung up on me.
8/9/15 Just received an automated message call stating the same things as per previous posts. When I called back I also got someone that said "Tax Crime investigation department" and then when I asked how can I tell this is a valid number, the man with a slight non-Aussie accent I didn't get a chance to detect, told me I could validate it by calling back band hung up on me. I tried since and it rang out several times. Pathetic.
Just got the same supposed ATO message left on my voicemail. 110% dodgy. I work for an accounting firm that deals with the ATO regularly and this is definitely not how they operate.
Hoping they try me again and I can answer it next time.
I got a call from this number 08/09/2015. I have been talking to ATO in past but this definitely sounds dodgy. ATO nevers calls like that. They usually send letter first if there is a problem. Then they call and its a live person and not a robot call.02 6100 3071. I called like 10 times but call does nor go through. Need to understand that even if that was actual ATO number call would have been re directed to a automated voice services which will guide us. I believe that is a Scam.
I called the number a few times on mute and heard 2 other indian guys talking to people in the background. Definitely a scam. Never trust a bank or government agency who cold calls you. Always lookup their details online and call the numbers listed on the website.
Automated call to mobile just received and for fun rang the number using a landline as it was clearly dodgy and got someone that said "Tax Crime investigation department" and then when challenged to advise from what department where the line went dead.
Received a call from this number today with recorded message:
"Hi I am calling you from Australian Taxation Office. We were trying to reach you in regards to an important message. We have legal affidavit regarding tax fraud on your name. The direct line to reach us is 02 6100 3071. I repeat 02 6100 3071. Don't disregard this message and return the call. If for any reason you are busy to call us back, we would suggest you have your to do it for you as delay in calling us back might end up in a legal mess for you. Further we would be forced to contact local authorities and register this case against you. So I hope you justify this matter as quick as possible, thanks.".
This is a fake number, its from indian guy, today I told him off, please block this number on your phone.
Just got a call from this number and my heart stopped and realised nobody would call you and leave a voicemail saying it is about Tax Fraud! IGNORE!
Just got a call as well.. Glad this page exists as it was a bit unnerving to have an automated voicemail message saying that my name was associated with tax fraud!
Called back and was clearly a fraud, indian call centre, very unprofessional, which I'm glad for as this sort of scam involving the ATO would be very easy to fall for.
Consumer Affairs WA says this scam has been running for a few months. The scammers change their telephone number every couple of days. They are internet phone numbers and divert overseas.
The phone calls are automated and there are thousands of them made each day.
They are likely to ring again. Advice: just ignore.
Yes, they left a recorded message on our message bank. Man with an American accent urged us not to ignore the call. I am reporting to WA Consumer Protection.
I also received an automated call from this number. Very dodgy. Glad I Googled it and found this page.
Yes received also claiming to be from ATO said I had add been reviewed from tax return 2008-12 found tax fraud owing $4k. Said sounds not legit call, should be directed by coresspondence to accountant etc. Wanted to me to submit to recording. Said no way, sounds dodgy, he replied "You will regret this" I said now I know for your sure your not legit. I hang up.
Received an automated message from this number today, referring to tax fraud, etc. Kinda funny - especially the deep voice - except that some poor people will no doubt get caught out by these scammers. Hopefully the ATO will alert people to it soon.
I also answered a call from this number on my mobile (8/9/15;2:30pm). It was a computerised system telling me that they had tries to get in touch and informing me to contact the ATO about suspected tax fraud. The number provided was this 02 61003071. It was also the same number which appeared on my mobile when I took the call. I immediately became suspicious especially with the computerised voice having an American accent.
Scam!
Rang this number back and the guy sounded like an Indian or Middle eastern and told me he was sleeping I asked about the message left and he said I owed money to ato I said bullshit and he hung up on me.
I had one of these calls too. In the past I've had the occasional call from the ATO and they are always from private numbers with no calling number display. This one is bogus for sure, phishing for personal tax information.
Yep, I too got a fake call from this number claiming to be the ATO...
I would suggest looking up the ATO number and calling them if you were concerned about fraud. Note there is no case number etc to reference.
Left a message stating they were from the ATO and investigating tax fraud. Very dodgy. I'd suspect the ATO wouldn't leave an automated message if there was a real issue.
Had a missed call from this number and a voicemail was left with an automated voice claiming the call was from the ATO and they were investigating Taxation Fraud - IT IS A SCAM!
