Understanding the 02 6100 3069 / 0261003069 Scam Calls
If you've received a call from 02 6100 3069 / 0261003069, chances are you're dealing with a scam. This number has garnered numerous complaints from unsuspecting recipients who report being harassed by a robocall claiming to represent the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). The call often features a robotic voice, insidiously claiming urgency and threatening legal action if the recipient fails to respond.
The Scam Explained
The most common theme observed in user reports is that the caller introduces themselves as an 'officer' from the ATO or even ASIO, with names like "John Smith" and references to a so-called "Tax Crime Division." These calls typically use alarming language, suggesting impending legal penalties and demanding immediate payment or a return call, often in a robotic American tone, raising significant red flags regarding their legitimacy.
Critical Warning Signs
- Automated Voice: Most legitimate Australian government agencies do not use automated American-accented messages to communicate urgent matters.
- Threatening Language: The calls suggest severe consequences, such as legal action or arrest without any credible verification.
- Demand for Immediate Action: Victims report being urged to call back immediately or risk facing court action. Legitimate communication from the ATO would not pressure individuals this way.
How to Handle Such Calls
If you receive a call from this number, it’s best practice to:
- Do Not Engage: Hang up immediately if you start to hear familiar phrases related to urgent financial threats.
- Verify Independently: Contact the ATO directly using official contact information if you are unsure about your tax status.
- Report the Scam: Consider reporting such incidents to Scamwatch or your local consumer protection agency to help warn others.

Same calls as others have found. Recorded voice called twice yesterday (7/9/15) at 1:51 PM and 2:46 PM. Said they were "officer" John Smith from ASIO. A clear SCAM.
Just got a call from this number saying he was from Australian Taxation Office Crime department. What a joke. I do not have a cent of income for almost 3 years.
Just got the same call. John Smith. I couldn't get the number to connect.
I got a call too, I called them back and strung them along for a bit. Finally got called a motherf... And I just laughed back at them.
Definitely routes to overseas (India) as it's a different dial tone.
My husband received a call from this number today - so phoned him (David Brown) back and asked some questions 1 his name 2. When was the paperwork sent out 3. Email address he quite upset at that 4. When and who did the audit on the account at that one he just thanked me for my time and hung up. When I tried to phone back there was not answer. One thing that was very prominent in his message, was that we needed to get a lawyer because my husband was going to be arrested (jailed for 3 - 5 years)if we didn't pay NOW by credit card or debit cart. Guess they don't like it when you turn the tables and ask questions.
Yes I also had a message left from John Smith ATO Tax Crime today at 4.05pm.
Just got called from this dodgy number as well, with the same robot message. Just hang up.
I received an automated message form this umber saying they were with the taxation office but it was an american voice and talked about "if I didn't call back or if my Attorney didn't call back then there could be severe penalties".
In australia we wouldn't use a computerised American voice for these messages!.
Clearly a scam!
Yes, just got a call from this number and a voicemail was left. Same deal as all the comments above. Robot John Smith from tax crime.
Happens regularly.
Got a call from a recorded voice claiming to be John Smith from the ATO which said I had to call the number 02 6100 3069 to resolve an issue with the ATO and that he would take the matter further if he didn't hear from me or my attorney. I am positive this is a scam and will not be calling this number.
What a shocker - I feel sorry for people who this stresses out!!
Total scam - Avoid.
Got a missed call from this number and a computer automated message claiming to be from the ATO, the nature of the message was about it being time sensitive and stated name was 'John Smith' also mentioned that if I did not call back or action '.. I wish you good luck ..' which seemed threatening or just plain strange. I would like this number to be investigated.
Just a got a call from this number as well. John Smith ATO crime division. "Get a solicitor or god help you." Glad I'm not the only one or it would very weird. All in all a pretty over the top hilarious attempt at phishing. Maybe a hoax. Either way ignore it.

Total silence and then hang up.
This was a call from someone claiming to be the ATO Crime Division, speaking in a very American accent. I was asked to return the call or get my solicitor to 'or God help me.'.
What a joke.
Same as above. Got message saying from Australian tax office. Got to be a scam. I have no debts outstanding etc..
This is a scam number, thank you to those who've posted previously for confirming.
Same as Robert. Got a robocall telling me to ring this number immediately. The message was from "Officer John Smith" and did not give any independent way of verifying the message, e.g. a page on the ATO web site.
Looks like a scam.
This is dodgy some guy is claiming to be with the ATO Crime division and is saying that I owe him $3.878 to pay. He gave his name as Roy Miller and his employee number 175418.
I asked him to provide supporting evidence and documentation then asked why I did not receive an official tax investigation notice, he replied with I'm being taken to Federal Court.
Be very careful and ignore this number.
Just got called by this number. Couldn't hear anything.
I got a robocall (with an American accent), from this number just this second about a "time sensitive ATO Tax matter". I'd say that it's a scam.100% certain.
The phasing it used was moronic, obviously the person behind the scam isn't too bright.
Just got a call from this number with a robotic American male voice that said he was 'Officer John Smith' with the Australian Tax Crime Division or something like that. Told me to put aside what I was doing and call back immediately, otherwise he can only wish me good luck as the matter unfolds... Sounds totally legit....
Got a phone call from this number telling me I need to contact the ATO "tax crime device". Looks like a phishing exercise.
