Understanding the Scam Behind 02 6100 3056

Receiving a call from the number 02 6100 3056 / 0261003056 can be alarming, especially when it is associated with threats from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Based on numerous user reports, it’s clear that this number falls into the scam category, specifically targeting victims by impersonating tax officials.

Type of Scam

Users describe similar experiences involving a supposed ATO representative named Ray Hamilton, who uses coercive tactics to instil fear. Callers report hearing prepared robotic messages, often in an American accent, demanding the individual to return the call immediately regarding urgent tax fraud allegations. The scam escalates as callers are instructed to purchase pre-paid VISA cards to 'settle' their supposed debts, which is a classic hallmark of financial scams.

How the Scam Works

  • Victims receive phone calls with automated threats about legal actions, often insisting that failure to respond could lead to court cases.
  • The callers often provide misleading information, such as referencing registered post notifications that have never been sent.
  • The urgency created by these calls pressures victims to comply, leading them to purchase pre-paid cards which they are misled to believe will absolve them of any wrongdoing.

Why You Should Be Careful

The common thread among user experiences highlights how victims can feel intimidated and misled into thinking they owe money to the ATO. Trustworthy authorities such as the ATO will never threaten legal action over the phone or request payment through unconventional means such as pre-paid cards. Understanding these indicators is vital to avoid giving personal or financial information to unscrupulous callers.

Dealing with Such Calls

If you receive a call from 02 6100 3056 / 0261003056, it is advisable to:

  • Do not engage with the caller or provide any personal information.
  • Consider hanging up immediately.
  • Report the number to local authorities and notify the ATO of the scam.
  • Use services such as Reverseau for a better understanding of who called you, particularly if you're unsure about the legitimacy of a number.

Got a voicemail left from this number too... Everything above describes it perfectly! Thank you for sharing... It definitely felt dodgy and unofficial but wanted to double check! Glad I looked it up on Google, didn't expect this forum to come up but very helpful indeed.

We got the same call, American accent, text to voice. Thanks to others for posting this page, it makes it clear this is a scam.

Yep same as others, about midday today. Silence for about 5 seconds, then an American text-to-speech pre-recorded message about being investigated for tax fraud. Obvious scam.

The problem is, the ATO actually does have its staff (call centre) call taxpayers with outstanding debts.

They ring from a private number, and then ask you for DOB and address, and refuse to discuss any details until you tell them. The last time this happened, I asked for the agent's details, and called the ATO directly to be put back on the line with him, and it turns out it was a legitimate call. They then ask for credit card details to make payment over the phone.

Pretty poor practise ATO!!

I got one too! I stressed for the last hour or so until I put it into Google and found this page - phew! Thought I'd done something wrong!

They left me the same message on my voicemail that others mention. Was weird as the start of the voicemail had about 15 seconds of silence so I almost hung up before the American accent came on telling me I was being investigated for fraud.

I called back just before 5:30pm today. No answer. I called again and someone answer & then hung up before saying anything. Called a third time and they answered saying the office was closed and to call back tomorrow. He was quite rude and hung up before I could ask what time they opened. He did however claim to be from a tax office or something.

I'm calling bullshit! I'll call them back tomorrow and see what they say ;).

I've receive the call form Ray Hamilton (~ an hour ago). Firstly he gave the wrong address, then he gave a time framed of 7 year during which I’ve forged the tax system. This made me to realise that it is a scam. So I pretended to be following his instruction, at one point he asked me to purchase three pre-paid cards from post office of value '$999'. The rest are pretty much the same as he explained to others. Then I responded him that I won't purchase the pre-paid card, you may take my account to the court. The reply form his side was…. a hang-up tone (not surprised), Coward scammers. Lodging a complain to ATO. Seems like some my information was stolen, I’m glad that he got an incorrect address..

I didn't answer the call to my mobile and received a recorded message (with American accent) about tax fraud against my name and I should call the same number back or retain an attorney to do so. If I ignore the call they "will lodge a case with the local authorities.".

Definite scam. American accent for ATO? Reference to Attorney? Lodge a case with local authorities? Keep trying scammers.

Yep, same here; got this call 20 minutes ago. I'm phoning the police now.

I received a call with a pre-recorded, machine-generated robotic-sounding voice recording claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office telling me to return the call regarding tax-fraud against my name.

It told me not to ignore the call and if I am too busy to get my "retained attorney" to.

Clearly a scam.

So I just got called up by another rude Indian man (Ray Hamilton) claiming to be from the Australian Tax Office (02 6100 3056) - scammer operation threatening to send the police to me and take me to court for tax fraud and a $48K fine. Or I could settle it by going to my local post office and ordering three Visa Load and Go cards for $780 each - which I need to give to a settlement agent who will contact me about the mistake... They tell you they've sent registered post warnings to your house and everything! WTF aren't the police onto this???!! Please be wary everyone they are horrible! Anyone else?
