I just got this call today. Fortunately I always leave my phone on silent. As I don't pick any phone call either private number or numbers are not in my contact list. They left a voice message to me. I listended to it and it indicated to me that this is a scamming call. As I pay my tax and obey by the law. Also I always follow the news and news from other countries. If you always pay your fair and share and you don't need to worry about those calls. My strategy is "If you are my friend and authority and leave a message with a phone number but it must be a police station, Australian Tax Office phone number. I will check and call back.

Got a call from this number today claiming to be from the ATO. Like previous reviews, really scary sounding messages left by an automated voice tone. Stated that they tried to reach out to me and I didn't respond and that my family is in danger. They told me that since I didn't respond, I was committing a fraud.

Had phone call from this number caller stating he was from the ato, telling me I owed money. He gave me details of an account at western union to place the money in if I don't do this I will be arrested, Next morning he called again telling me western union was closed today so place money into commonwealth account, Talked to ato police and scam watch about this, since I do not answer these phone calls any more was what I was advised.

Now using 02 6100 3024. Looks like the 3027 number may have been shut down.

Certainly does raise some eyebrows when you listen to the recorded message left on your voice mail :).

Missed a call from this number today. Called back the person on the other side on the line knew my name, old address and clearly my mobile number and claimed to be calling from ATO. Said I hadn't paid tax or paid less between the years 2008 to 2012 and I have a legal allegation against me. Funny fact is, I didn't even live in Australia those years.. As soon as I told them I don't think they are from the ATO they hung up on me.

OK, good info on this scam at SCAMwatch:

You can also report this scam (or any others) to SCAMwatch online (see Quick links on the SCAMwatch home page) or by phone: 1300 795 995.

SCAMwatch also has links to other organisations that deal with scams:

[link] well as lots of info on types of scams and how to protect yourself.

This ATO scam has been going on since at least APRIL (on the SCAMwatch page they list only one phone number used by the scammers: 02 6100 3027).

Looks like the call back number has changed. It is now (02) 61403419. Callback rings out but ringing tone sounds like USA or VOIP.

Telephone calls alleging fake arrest warrants used to scam money.

April 2015: SCAMwatch is warning consumers to be aware of calls from scammers falsely claiming to be from the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) or Australian Tax Office (ATO).

Scammers have recently been calling Australians telling them that there is a warrant out for their arrest. Many people have reported to SCAMwatch that messages have been recorded on their answering machines asking them to call back later. The telephone number provided is 0261003027 and they ask you to call during office hours to discuss the matter further. However, the telephone number has no connection with the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, Australian Taxation Office or any other state or commonwealth department.

The scammers may spin a range of stories about why an arrest warrant has been issued, including that you have failed to pay taxes.

Scammers typically ask for money to be sent via wire transfer as it’s nearly impossible to recover money sent this way. They may also ask for people’s financial and other personal details to access their money and use this information to commit other scams.

Be on guard, if you receive a phone call from someone saying you have an arrest warrant and asking you to pay a fee, hang up and do not respond. If in doubt, don’t use the contact details provided - look up the government department or organisation yourself in the phone book or online and phone or email them.

Received this message on my answering machine, rang Tax Office and they thought it was a fraud so did a fraud report. I haven't heard anything from Tax office since.

Went to local police station and an event report was done there. Police thought it was a fraud too as they rang the number and was answered tax office and asked who they were speaking to and the person immediately hung up. It really frightened me as I am 78 years old. I am certain now it is a fraud but at the time it was really scary.

Just got the same call curious that it was an american voice and the language was not correct. This has to be a scam but I am not sure what they are getting from it.

We have been receiving calls on both our mobiles and landline phone, all at same time. I went to website DCPP and there is a message clearly stating the calls are SCAM. Extremely annoying for us in WA, as our time difference often wakes us up in middle of night. Our policy is, if the number is not listed in our phones, we do not answer or reply.

Got an automated message from this number at 11.18 on Saturday morning, rang the cops and they said to ignore it.

I'm in WA and also got same message on my landline answer machine @ 5.30AM this morning. I'm also registered on DoNotCall (for what it's worth). Now, if the govt is going to retain all our data, this is a good test of effectiveness... And intent.

My neighbor came to my house in a panic about a message on his voice mail this morning. Pretty much exactly what has already been said in the previous comments was said in the voice mail. Im no detective, but from all what was said in the message and the way it was said.... Its not legitimate.

Received by voicemail in Western Australia.

Hi this is Officer Tyler Willams.

Associate of CDPP.

Calling on behalf of Australian Taxation Office.

The reason you getting a call from out Department because we got an arrest warrant out and right now there are some legal allegations on your name which are not controlled by your state, territories or capital cities, but actually they are controlled by CDPP which Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions which is in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. Before this law suit gets downloaded in the Commonwealth Court House of your territory and you receive any legal course of action. Do return a call on our straight line number that goes 61261003027 again it goes 61261003027, do call back between the normal business hours from 9am to 4:30pm at your own standard time. Thank you.

Same call I received from this number. American ascent. I didn't pic up. It creates disturbance in the life.

Taxation office goes firstly through your accountant & mail issues to you. Also if they call you speak with a real person not a generated voice & they don't speak in a threatening tone either. Just ignore folks.

I too received a crank call at almost 6 am on both my mobile and landline at the same time. Pretty funny how an electronic dude can warn me of an arrest warrant so that I have time to go hide. Lol! Not to mention it was an American accent. Oh well I suppose it's better than arguing with the chauvinistic Indians who want to help me fix a virus on my computer.

I got a call from this number twice today. My name was not mentioned but officer Tyler Williams said that there was an arrest warrant in my name! I called the police and they said that it is a scam and that I should report it to scam watch. Don't call the number back, it might end up dealing overseas which will be expensive.
