SMS scam alert: 5493743614842 impersonates PayPal with fake transaction alerts, fake hold notifications, and requests to call false security numbers.

PayPal Impersonation SMS Scam from 5493743614842

One contributor reported receiving an SMS from 5493743614842 on 20 October 2026 falsely claiming an unusual transaction on their PayPal account. The message referenced a A$412.85 charge from "Harborview Electronics" and claimed PayPal had placed a temporary hold on the account that would "auto-release in minutes". The SMS from 5493743614842 instructed the recipient to call a fake security team at +61 (1800) 518162 to block the release.

This follows a similar PayPal scam attempt the contributor received two days earlier from a different number (+48577634490), which used an identical playbook with a A$333.40 fraudulent transaction and a different fake security callback number (1800 579502). The pattern indicates the scammer is running multiple SMS campaigns across different numbers with the same social engineering approach.

What the SMS from 5493743614842 Says

The fake PayPal message uses urgency and false authority to pressure the recipient into action:

  • Claims an "unusual transaction" has been detected on the account
  • States a temporary hold is in place
  • Warns the hold will "auto-release in minutes" (creating time pressure)
  • Requests immediate callback to a fake security number to "block the release"
  • Impersonates legitimate PayPal account protection processes

The scammer knows PayPal does use temporary holds on suspicious transactions, making the claim superficially believable. However, the callback number provided in the SMS from 5493743614842 is fraudulent and designed to capture payment details or personal information when the victim calls.

How This Scam Works

When a victim calls the fake security number provided in the 5493743614842 SMS:

  • Social engineering: The scammer answers as "PayPal security" and confirms the fake transaction details
  • Information harvesting: They request account credentials, date of birth, or card details to "verify" the account
  • Payment request: They may claim a small verification fee is needed to release the hold
  • Account takeover: Collected credentials are used to access the real PayPal account

What to Do If You Receive an SMS from 5493743614842

If you receive an SMS claiming to be from PayPal with a similar message:

  • Do not: Call the number provided in the SMS, click any links, or reply to the message
  • Do not: Share personal information, account credentials, or card details
  • Do: Delete the SMS immediately
  • Do: Block the number 5493743614842 in your phone settings
  • Do: Contact PayPal directly using the phone number on your statement or the official PayPal website to verify any transaction alerts
  • Do: Check your PayPal account directly (without clicking SMS links) to see if the transaction is genuine
  • Do: Enable two-factor authentication on your PayPal account for additional security

Identifying Fake PayPal SMS Alerts

Real PayPal alerts have distinguishing features that 5493743614842 scam SMS messages typically lack:

  • Legitimate PayPal SMS alerts are sent from official PayPal shortcodes or verified numbers, not international numbers like 5493743614842
  • Real alerts do not ask you to call a number or provide personal details via SMS
  • Genuine PayPal communications encourage you to log in to your PayPal account directly, never via SMS links
  • Official alerts do not use urgency language like "hold will auto-release in minutes"
  • PayPal never requests callbacks to security numbers via SMS

Tues 20/10/26, received an SMS from +5493743614842. "An unusual transaction detected on PayPay for A$412.85 from Harborview Electronics". Like last time they placed a temporary hold which will "auto-release in minutes". I must call their security team at +61 (1800) 518162 to block the release.

Two days ago they tried the PayPal scam SMS from +48577634490, that time only A$333.40 from Blue Pine Market Co. The number to call that that time was 1800 579502.

They keep trying. I keep chuckling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would someone send a fake PayPal SMS from 5493743614842?

Scammers use the 5493743614842 SMS to trick you into calling a fake security number where they impersonate PayPal staff. Their goal is to capture your account credentials, personal details, or payment information. Once they have this data, they can access your real PayPal account, steal funds, or commit identity fraud. The fake transaction and hold notification create urgency to bypass your normal caution.

What should I do if I already called the number from the 5493743614842 SMS?

If you called the fake security number provided in the 5493743614842 message, change your PayPal password immediately using a trusted device. Contact your bank if you shared card details. Monitor your accounts for unauthorised transactions. Report the scam to PayPal, ACMA, and Scamwatch. Consider placing a fraud alert with your bank or credit bureau if personal information was disclosed.

How do I verify if a transaction alert from 5493743614842 is real?

Do not trust the SMS from 5493743614842. Instead, log directly into your PayPal account via the official app or website (not via any link in the SMS) and check your transaction history. You can also call PayPal's official customer service number from the back of your PayPal statement or the legitimate PayPal website. Never call numbers provided in unexpected SMS messages like the one from 5493743614842.

Is 5493743614842 a real PayPal number?

No. The number 5493743614842 is not a legitimate PayPal contact number. PayPal does not send SMS alerts requesting callbacks to security numbers. The international format of 5493743614842 is a clear indicator it is not an official PayPal communication. PayPal's verified SMS typically come from shortcodes or official numbers clearly labelled in your account settings.

What makes the 5493743614842 scam convincing?

The scammer using 5493743614842 references a plausible scenario: PayPal does place temporary holds on suspicious transactions for security. They include a realistic amount (A$412.85) and merchant name to make the claim appear credible. The time pressure ("auto-release in minutes") bypasses rational thinking. However, real PayPal alerts never ask you to call a number via SMS. The request itself is the red flag.

Should I block 5493743614842?

Yes, block 5493743614842 immediately. However, blocking one number provides limited protection because scammers typically use many different numbers for the same campaign. The contributor reported a similar scam from +48577634490 just two days before receiving the 5493743614842 message. Focus on education: learn to recognise the scam pattern rather than relying solely on blocking individual numbers. Report all instances to ACMA and Scamwatch.
