The phone number 1800 861 392 / 00861392 has been flagged by users as a scam. It is reportedly linked to a fraudulent PayPal call centre that attempts to deceive individuals into providing personal and financial information. The communication typically originates from a misleading SMS and attempts to panic recipients into returning a call.

Type of Scam: PayPal Phishing

Reports indicate that callers using this number claim to be from PayPal, often referencing fake transactions that did not occur. A common tactic involves sending a text message alerting users of a supposed unauthorized transaction, such as a withdrawal of $910.00 AUD, allegedly to an individual named Mr. James K Smith. These messages often instruct recipients to contact the given number immediately for dispute resolution, a clear attempt to manipulate the victim into divulging sensitive information.

Why This is Considered a Scam

Several factors contribute to the classification of 1800 861 392 / 00861392 as a scam:

  • Location of Origin: Reports suggest that calls from this number divert to overseas locations, commonly associated with scams. This indicates a potential lack of accountability.
  • Urgency and Pressure: Scammers often employ tactics requiring immediate action, which is designed to create a sense of panic. Victims may feel rushed to respond without verifying the legitimacy of the communication.

What to Do If You Encounter This Number

If you receive a call or message from 1800 861 392:

  • Do Not Engage: Avoid calling back or responding to any messages. Engaging may confirm to the scammer that your number is active.
  • Block the Number: Take proactive steps to block this fraudulent number on your phone to prevent further contact.

SCAM. Supposedly a PayPal call center but it diverts to an Indian scam factory. Poor attempt at scamming given the obviously fake SMS and content in the message. Number is contained in a text from "TM-COMBNK".
