Understanding the Scam Behind 1300 216 746

The phone number 1300 216 746 has been flagged by several users as connected to a phishing scam posing as a message from Commonwealth Bank. This number has reportedly been used to send misleading SMS messages claiming to provide transaction codes for users who do not hold accounts with Commonwealth Bank, leading to confusion and potential financial risk.

The Nature of the Scam

The scam involves messages that seem very convincing at first glance, often including the recipient's name and a transaction detail, such as:

  • A claimed transaction amount, for example, 850.30 AUD to AIRBNB.
  • A sense of urgency that compels the user to either confirm the transaction or contact the number provided.
  • A legitimate-looking caller ID that pretends to be related to a recognized financial institution.

However, users who do not bank with Commonwealth Bank find this communication alarming and indicative of a scam, as they have no business with the bank whatsoever. The message generally concludes with a line urging recipients to call the number in case they did not authorise the transaction, suggesting coercively that failure to respond might put them at risk.

Recognising the Signs of a Phishing Scam

Several traits classify 1300 216 746 as a high-risk scam number:

  • Unsolicited messages that prompt urgent action.
  • Claims involving significant financial transactions or changes.
  • Association with businesses that recipients do not engage with.

It's essential to be aware that legitimate businesses will never ask you to confirm transactions via SMS in this manner. If you receive such a message, consider it an immediate red flag.

How to Handle Calls and Messages from 1300 216 746

If you receive a call or message from this number, here are some steps you can take:

  • Do Not Respond: Avoid calling the number back or sharing any personal information.
  • Verify Independently: If you're concerned about your financial accounts, directly contact your bank through their official channels.
  • Report the Scam: Consider reporting the incident to the appropriate authorities or platforms focused on consumer protection in Australia.

Utilising resources like Reverseau can also aid in a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to gather more information about the numbers that are frequently reported as spam or scams. This practice will not only enhance your awareness but also help strengthen the community against these fraudulent activities.

In conclusion, the phone number 1300 216 746 has been conclusively identified as a source of phishing scams aimed at unsuspecting individuals. By remaining vigilant and informed, you can help safeguard yourself against such deceptive tactics.

I received an identical SMS on Friday, March 24, 2023, that was exactly the same as another report I saw. I definitely do not have an account with Commonwealth Bank, so this appears to be a scam.

On Friday, March 24, 2023, I received a message that read: "COMMBANK - FROM COMM: Your code is 927288 for a transaction of 850.30 AUD to Airbnb. If this was NOT you, please call us on 1300 216 746 RED: COM11." This is clearly a scam since I have never banked with Commonwealth Bank.
