I recieved an sms this morning from a spoofed number followed by a call from an individual claiming to be an RACV representative attempting to gather proof of identification, presumably an identify theft scam. When I expressed my concerns over sharing sensitive information they suggested I call back the 1300108187 number on the message, which is obviously not a legitimate RACV number. I've since spoken with a real RACV rep who confirmed they made no attempts to contact me.
What makes this scam particularly alarming is the sms appeared to be from a legitimate RACV number, and the scammer sounded very professional with no discernible foreign accent whatsoever. A strong reminder to be wary sharing personal information over the phone, and when in doubt, look up the number yourself and call the company back directly. Stay safe!
Received an email purporting to be NRMA (motorclaims@nrma.com.au) about an insurance claim. I haven't got an active claim. Several links included in the email. The contact number was 1300 108 187, which when called, contains a well made NRMA answering service and option menu.
Email included the legitimate 132132 number for those wanting a copy of privacy documentation - which no one would and if you did, you would receive legitimate documents and potentially still be unaware the email is a scam.
Enclosed address is local, but when searched it's actually the office for Queensland Revenue... A messed up hidden joke given the fact the revenue made will come from you if you don't realise the email is a scam.
Used by scammers to spoof NRMA Insurance. They establish trust by sending a few harmless confirmatory text messages quoting the number then milk you of your details. BEWARE of this number.
