Victims report receiving calls from individuals claiming to be representatives of Telstra, using deceptive tactics to elicit personal information.

Details of the Scam

Users have reported a common approach employed by this number. The callers typically claim that they have data regarding the user’s internet performance—often stating that issues are linked to the broadband provider. The scheme predominantly unfolds as follows:

  • Callers assert that they are from Telstra, referencing the user's internet performance.
  • They request that the recipient be in front of their computer, claiming assistance is necessary for troubleshooting.
  • Importantly, they demand the user to vocally confirm phrases, specifically requesting them to say "windows," which raises substantial red flags about the legitimacy of their requests.
  • This approach appears to be a wellness-strategy aimed more at obtaining vocal data than offering assistance.

Understanding the Deceptive Tactics

This type of call exemplifies common phishing scams, where fraudsters aim to reach into unsuspecting individuals' security settings by coercing them into providing sensitive information or vocal confirmations that could be exploited. Phishing schemes often use manipulation tactics, persuading the recipient that they need to verify information or provide access for perceived technical issues.

They pretended to be Telstra and said they got data from my internet provider saying people were using my internet which is why my internet was slow. They said they needed me to be on a computer to check. Then they INSISTED I tell them what the key next to ctrl was... If they were genuinely Telstra why would they ask me to verbally say “windows”? And insist me in saying the word outloud rather than saying “Can you press the window key which is next to ctrl”? They were clearly recording to get voice data off me and wanted me to say the word windows and were hoping to get more specific words off me so that it could be edited into other words for a telephone call later for themselves.
