Understanding the Caller Behind 08 9173 3618

If you've received a call from 08 9173 3618 / 0891733618, you may be wondering about the legitimacy of the caller. Based on user reports, this number appears to be associated with a suspicious telemarketing call, potentially impersonating the National Broadband Network (NBN).

The Nature of the Call

In one notable instance reported on 28 January 2021, a caller with an Indian accent claimed to be from the NBN and stated they had detected multiple errors from the user's NBN service. This raises immediate red flags as legitimate organisations typically do not reach out in this informal manner, especially without personal information.

There Are Signs of a Scam

  • Unverified Claims: The caller's claim about receiving errors lacks clear evidence and could be a tactic to frighten users into providing personal information.
  • Inconsistent Information: When pressed for more details, such as the caller's company address, the information they provided was inconsistent, citing a Melbourne address for a number registered in Port Hedland, WA.
  • Hang-Up on Inquiry: The abrupt end to the conversation when asked for clarification is typically indicative of a scam, as legitimate companies should have no problem answering queries.

How to Handle Calls From This Number

If you receive a call from 08 9173 3618 / 0891733618, it’s advisable to:

  • Avoid Giving Information: Do not provide any personal or financial information to the caller.
  • Verify Independently: Contact the service provider directly using official contact details rather than returning the call.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect it to be a scam, consider reporting it to your local consumer protection agency.

In conclusion, while 08 9173 3618 / 0891733618 may not be definitively classified purely as a scam, the inconsistencies and aggressive sales tactics noted raise significant concerns. A caller with an Indian accent told me they were from the National Broadband Network and they had received multiple errors from my National Broadband Network over the past few days. I asked them which provider they were from and they would only answer National Broadband Network. I asked for the address of their company and they gave me one in Melbourne. I then asked why the address was in Melbourne but their phone number came up as in Port Headland in WA. They then hung up on me.
