Telco Impersonation Scam Reports for 08 7119 7781

Five contributors have reported calls from 08 7119 7781 (also written as 0871197781) involving scam attempts impersonating major Australian telecommunications and financial services providers. The pattern is consistent: poor audio quality, delayed connections, and false claims of account compromises requiring immediate action.

Three of the five reports specifically describe impersonation tactics, with callers claiming affiliation with Telstra, Visa, or Mastercard. A contributor who answered a call from 0871197781 reported the caller claimed to be from Telstra, stating that the recipient's internet had "gone public" and providing a fake reference number. When the recipient independently verified with Telstra, the telco confirmed it was a scam and that they do not initiate cold calls about such issues.

What Callers from 08 7119 7781 Claim

Contributors describe callers from 08 7119 7781 using urgency and impersonation as primary tactics. One report notes a caller claiming to be from "Visa and Mastercard Fraud" with immediate alarm bells raised by the poor audio quality and delayed response when the supposed agent answered. Another contributor received a call from 0871197781 where the caller claimed to represent Telstra regarding a network security issue, again with a scratchy phone line and fabricated reference number to appear legitimate.

The audio quality reported across multiple calls from 08 7119 7781 is notably poor, with contributors describing scratchy, delayed connections typical of international call centres using automated dialling systems. One detailed report mentions receiving multiple calls from this number and a related number (08 7119 7786), with voicemail messages containing only brief "hello?" statements in an Indian accent, consistent with autodialler systems that connect callers only after several seconds.

Call Patterns and Timing

Reports of 08 7119 7781 span late October through late November, with calls occurring at various times including weekday afternoons and overnight periods that trigger missed call notifications. One contributor received multiple calls from 0871197781 within a single day, alongside calls from the similar number 08 7119 7786.

The pattern suggests systematic dialling from a shared number bank. A contributor noted that scammers appear to be drawing from consecutive, pre-allocated numbers, evidenced by the near-identical number 08 7119 7786 also being flagged as a known phishing scam number impersonating Vodafone. This suggests a coordinated scam operation rather than isolated incidents.

What to Do If You Receive a Call from 08 7119 7781

If 08 7119 7781 calls you:

  • Do not: Engage with the caller, provide personal or account information, or follow instructions to access accounts or click links
  • Do not: Trust caller ID alone-major telcos rarely cold-call about account security on poor quality lines
  • Do: Hang up immediately if the caller claims to be from Telstra, Vodafone, Optus, or financial institutions
  • Do: Let calls from 0871197781 go to voicemail rather than answering
  • Do: Independently verify by contacting the claimed organisation using an official number from their website, not a number provided by the caller
  • Do: Block the number in your phone settings

Why These Scams Target Australian Phone Numbers

Scammers use Australian phone number formats (like 08 7119 7781) and impersonate trusted local telcos and financial services because Australians are more likely to trust and answer calls appearing to come from domestic numbers. The poor audio quality and robocall characteristics of calls from 0871197781 are typical indicators of offshore scam operations using automated systems to dial bulk number lists, with live scammers picking up only after connection is established.

This number called today - scratchy phone line, delay in them asnswering telling me they were from "Visa and Mastercard Fraud" so immediate alarm bells. Hung up immediately.

Almost certainly a scam number. I received a missed call from this number two days ago and let it go to voicemail; the voicemail was a short 'hello?' with an Indian accent on a scratchy phone line, indicating an autodialler from a scam call centre (they don't know they are on voicemail due to the autodialler taking a few seconds to connect them). I received two scam calls today, one of which I picked up - this was an Indian man on a very poor phone line who claimed to be from Telstra; the line was so poor he terminated the call before I did. I then received another call that went to voicemail (again, they left a short 'hello?' message) from 08 7119 7786, which is almost identical to the above number. The listing for 08 7119 7786 notes it is a known phishing scam number, from which scammers have claimed to be calling from Vodafone.

Major telcos do not cold-call on scratchy phone lines using autodiallers. Most likely an Indian scam call centre is drawing from a bank of consecutive, banked numbers. Don't be fooled.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I receive a call from 08 7119 7781 claiming to be from Telstra or another telco?

Hang up immediately. Major Australian telcos including Telstra, Vodafone, and Optus do not cold-call customers on poor quality lines about account security or network issues. If you're concerned about your account, independently contact your telco using the official number on their website-not any number provided by the caller. Reports confirm that 08 7119 7781 (0871197781) has been used for this specific impersonation.

I received a voicemail from 0871197781 with just 'hello?' in a brief message. Is this a scam?

Very likely yes. This is a signature pattern of autodialler scam systems. The brief 'hello?' message indicates an automated system that has connected to voicemail before a live scammer picks up, or the scammer has abandoned the call. Multiple contributors have reported identical voicemail messages from 08 7119 7781 and the related number 08 7119 7786, both flagged as scam numbers. Do not return the call.

The caller from 08 7119 7781 gave me a reference number and said my internet had 'gone public.' Is this legitimate?

No. One contributor received this exact claim from 0871197781, stating their internet had 'gone public' and providing a fake reference number. When they contacted Telstra directly using an official number, Telstra confirmed this was a scam and that they do not initiate calls about such issues. Always verify independently using official contact details.

I answered a call from 08 7119 7781 and heard a delay before the person answered. What does this mean?

A delay before the caller responds-typically a few seconds-is characteristic of autodialler systems used by scam operations. The automated system dials many numbers simultaneously and only connects a live scammer once someone answers. Contributors have reported exactly this pattern with 0871197781, along with scratchy audio quality typical of international call centres. These are red flags to hang up immediately.

Should I block 08 7119 7781 on my phone?

Yes. Contributors have successfully blocked 0871197781 after identifying it as spam or scam. Blocking prevents further calls from this number. You should also report it to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) and ACMA (acma.gov.au) so the number can be investigated and flagged more broadly.

I noticed 08 7119 7781 and 08 7119 7786 are very similar numbers. Is this a coincidence?

Probably not. A detailed contributor report notes that scammers appear to be using consecutive, pre-allocated numbers from the same bank. The number 08 7119 7786 is also flagged as a known phishing scam claiming to be from Vodafone. This suggests a coordinated scam operation drawing from a series of similar numbers, all originating from the same scam call centre. If you're contacted by either number, treat it as a scam attempt.
