The Scam Explained

One user reported that a voicemail was left after they missed the call. The message claimed the Australian government had informed the individual that their passport was compromised and instructed them to contact an officer. This script resembles a common tactic used in government impersonation scams, where fraudsters aim to create a sense of urgency, thus pressuring victims into divulging personal information or making payments.

  • Impersonation of Government Authority: The voicemail message claims to be from the government, a common technique used by scammers.

  • No Valid Callback Information: Genuine government departments typically provide official ways to verify their messages, unlike the vague instruction to 'contact an officer'.

This number called and I didn’t answer it but they left a voicemail message saying that the Australian government has informed me that my passport has been used and I don’t think that’s true and telling me I need to contact an officer.
