    The reason why he’s calling you is because that person they are asking you about is in financial hardship. This guy I think is a debt collector.

    Ben called looking for my cousin. He said it was urgent that my cousin get in touch with him. I thought there had been a accident or something really bad. Turns out the Ben dude is just a debt collector. Not urgent as far as I am concerned. If you are reading this Ben... Stop alarming people unnecessarily.

    This is Pioneer Credit, They buy debts from banks for about 10 cents on the dollar and then pursue the debtor to try to receive the whole amount of the debt back. They pretend to be calling about someone else, to get you to return their call.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
